Solved Suddenly only some web pages working

Did something stupid last night and tried to find an online TV streaming site. I let my guard down by allowing a plug-in to be installed from one of the sites. However, I was on several sites at once, so I do not know that that was the culprit.

Anyway, now my homepage, hotmail, google, etc. all do not load - they time out. Occassionally one of them will actually break through and load but the screen is all messed up and contents list horizontally down the screen on the left instead of arranging where they should on the page. SOME websites work perfectly though.

This is with the most updated version of Firefox, so I tried switching to IE (which I never use). The very same problems occurred. On my laptop, everything is working fine, so I know that it is a local problem with my root machine but nothing seems to fix it!

Here are steps I have done:

1) I disabled all traces of the plug-in that I had installed - no luck
2) I uninstalled Firefox (though I kept my settings because I didn't want to lose my bookmarks), ran crap cleaner, reinstalled - no luck
3) Performed a full sweep with Spybot (although it wasn't updated because I could no longer updates). Found no problems
4) Ran the most up to date Malicious Software Removal Tool overnight - nothing detected
5) Did a command line Winsock reset in safe mode - no luck
6) Tried to use system restore to go back to a date a few days ago - my system has no restore points! This I did not know, and I am ticked.
7) Ran a fully updated virus scan with AVG - nothing found
8) Ran a quick scan with Malwarebytes Anti-Malware - nothing found
9) Ran full SFC scan - no Windows integrity violations

It seems as though some kind of port is being blocked but I cannot determine how to reset. Or some kind of malware is attempting to block certain websites.

Everything else on my system is working fine, so this is going to be a really sad day if I end up having to re-format!

One other detail, file transfers do not work in Messenger either. Files hang and await the start of transfer.

I also cannot receive file transfers on Messenger. They simply hang and do not even start. I have not yet done as full virus scan with AVG only because overnight hours were taken up with a Spybot scan and Malicious SR scan. Also because AVG update freezes without getting new virus signatures.

Sounds like malware.

Run a full virus scan as soon as possible.

Ok, doing a quick scan now and I'll do a full scan as soon as this completes.
Should I expect that this program will catch things that an up-to-date scan with Spybot would not have caught?

None are perfect, they will always miss something (usually on every computer), but this program is very good, and very good at getting the bad viruses and trojans, so yes, for this, it is better than Spybot, but Spybot should be run as well.

Updated newest attempts in core message, but in short, no malware/trojans detected by AVG, Malwarebytes, or Spybot.

I am running out of ideas.
I'm on the Hijackthis website now looking into running and posting a scan.

Damn it! Everything else on my computer works fine.

Yes, you could post a HiJackThis log. There are better logs, but this is a good starting point, and an expert will ask for them if they want them. Just as an idea, are you using a router, as routers can become infected with malware, and so I would suggest doing a reset on your router (this will remove any malware)

I am using a router but my laptop works fine and does not have the same problems. Should I reset the router anyway?? Is there something more in depth to do other than turning it on and off?

Unbelievably, it worked. I am shocked that the absolute easiest thing ended up being the solution, but isn't that often the case?

Thanks for the responses and for paying attention to my thread.
Now I have to figure out how to 'green checkmark' this thread to indicate problem solved.

Hello,

You are most welcome (even I am surprised that it worked, I though it would be too easy, and the problem too computer specific!)
