Hmmmmmmmmm, trying it now. The mini-installer crashes but just unzipping the portable seems to work. So far I don't see any difference except my speed dial is empty.

Well, seems as solid as 7 dev. version. Someone says this has hw acceleration on by default. I don't see a difference. Then again, I don't have a game-worthy video card either. :) It works so I'm not complaining. :)

edit: a nice side-effect is avoiding google update. No more silent upgrades that kill my favicons or break extensions. If I want to try a newer build I can unpack to a different folder and back up my settings before running.

Rather disconcerting. I clicked on Quote to do a follow-up to somebody's post and got the spinning cursor. In the status bar it said "waiting for google.com" !!! I wasn't doing a search, but a post! Unless it's just a fluke it would seem to indicate baby is calling home!!

You seem a bit lonely Miles, suppose I'll talk to you. :)

Chrome tends to say waiting on google.com a lot, I don't think its calling home persay, more or less likely attempting to communicate with its DNS Pre-fetching servers.

Didn't think of that. Wonder why it would use its own dns servers instead of the ones that come with your ISP unless, perhaps, to track you? I just have a feeling that people who stick on a sneaky don't take it off unless they've already found another hiding place.

..Not quite.

Its used to speed things up by pre-fetching things from their own servers to increase your browsing speed, this entire 'google is watching you' thing is ridiculous. Microsoft probably knows everything there is to know about you at this point, your age, location, sexual preference, everything.

Google doesn't really care what you do. Plain and simple.

And you know this because?

Microsoft bought Hotmail so I assume they did it for a reason. Google is just jumping on the bandwagon. I still don't see why using their DNS would be faster than my DNS caching. I guess I should shut the setting off. Bet I see no difference in performance whatever.

Each to his own, do not assume you'll see no difference before trying it. As to the part "And you know this because?". Let me rephrase what I stated earlier.

What I meant to say is, Microsoft and Google both know information that you probably would prefer them not having. I'm not saying they go and hunt it down but they gather it over time from various sign-ups and whatnot. If Google or Microsoft truly wanted your information for any 'sneaky' things they'd definitely try harder to get your information.

For example, if Google really wanted your information that badly they'd likely force users to put in their personal information (I mean PERSONAL, not your darn name!) before you could use their services. I know they do not ask for in-depth information unless it is truly needed. Such as Google Adsense asks for your address to send you your payments.

When I asked "and you know this because?" I wanted to know how you know, not what you think you know. You presume to tell me what google corporation cares about. So unless you are in the board meetings and can verify what the policy is, I suggest you give me another means of your knowledge. How do you know what a non-living corporation cares about? It's quite a boast. Back it up with something rather than just assertion.

Another bit of evidence for my point of view is google set as default search engine with a read-only search string. Look in the settings. To change the google search string you have to delete it, then add it back manually with your own string. If they didn't care they're sure going to some effort to discourage changing the string.

Also the chrome unique id has been documented. It's not a rumor. It moved from a file in the install folder to a registry setting. Since the registry setting is gone, I have to assume similar info is located in another place that another hacker will notice, provoking moving it yet again.

Likewise if you opt out of Customer Experience Improvement Program in Vista, the scheduled tasks will still gather the stats. You have to manually go into the task scheduler and kill off the stat gathering tasks one by one. Now isn't that peculiar?

While I respect your opinion and what you believe, I think I'm no longer going to post on this thread. The constant bashing of Google for no reason other than to bash it is rather redundant. Being a Chromium, Google Mail, Google Adsense, Youtube and Google DNS user myself. I have never felt that Google was monitoring me, let alone cared what I did as long as it wasn't illegal (such as posting how to make a bomb on youtube).

As you like. The matter is not in dispute:

Issue 51693 - chromium - RLZ should not be invoked on Chromium builds - Project Hosting on Google Code

Chrome pings home first thing to get a unique id to track what you do for marketing purposes. It's not even denied. If you look at the link, somebody forgot to pull the code from Chromium, since it's "non-branded" and therefore should not be doing any marketing tracking. If you want to pretend it ain't happening I can't stop you. But it seems silly to me to pretend reality is the way we want it rather than how it is.

I'm sure you'll be happy to know my foil helmet was made entirely from Double Mint gum wrappers!! I didn't shell out a cent for it!! heh heh

Don't be so serious dude! Sheesh!!

Sorry, I think we both took each others response as more then it was meant to be.

At any rate, I was unaware of this. At least its not as bad as everyone makes it out to be. 'Google watches everything you do'. It sounds more like google just watches what type of sites you visit such as tech related sites to provide the best advertisement towards yourself.

I have some spare tin foil, will mail you a custom made hat to replace your double mint gum wrapper one. ;)

On a side note, I see you have the developers badge. Would you mind telling me what programming language you use and what kind of applications you have worked on? :)

I look forward to the new tin foil. My original is wearing a bit thin.. or is it tin? heh heh

If you look in Vista freebie thread you'll see a few of mine with a link to my site. I use many programming languages. But lately I've been getting back into vc++. With the 7.1 sdk I can compile native 64 bit code even with the Express edition. Plus with the new lamda expressions I can write code I can't figure out the next day. Who could ask for more? :)
