Want to: i. delete default email client; ii. remove right-click menu item

I have Mozilla Thunderbird as my default email client. Also, my Explorer right-click menu lists Thunderbird as an option.

I'd like to have no default email client. Also, I'd like to get rid of the Thunderbird right-click Explorer menu choice.

Are there ways to accomplish this?

Thanks.

The following may help you remove Thunderbird from the right click context menu: Edit Context Menu Items In Windows 7 & Vista. If you can't do it through the registry, then try one of the free tool options. Before touching the registry, create a system restore point and backup the registry to be on the safe side - post back if you need help with those procedures.

While it is easy to change the default e-mail client, I don't know how to prevent the system from having something setup as the default, Why do you want no default e-mail client? If you do that (assuming it is even possible), then you will be unable to click on e-mail links to send messages. What problem is having a default e-mail client causing that you are trying to avoid? Perhaps there's some other solution.

I hope this at least partially helps.

Good luck!

The reason that I don't want Thunderbird as my default email client is that when I click on an email link, it triggers a bug in Thunderbird whereby a thunderbird.exe task starts, consumes a lot of CPU for about 15-20 seconds, dies, then another thunderbird.exe task starts, and so on. The remedy is to reboot.

I trigger this unintentionally sometimes when I try to select and CTRL-C an email address, but fat-finger it and click the email link instead.

The same thing happens if I mistakenly click on 'Thunderbird' in the Explorer right-click menu.

Thunderbird is my email client, but I am beyond my 2010 quota of 'thunderbird troubleshooting effort' and don't wish to troubleshoot the Thunderbird problem that I've described, above.

Thanks very much for your help!

Ralph
