Can't send outgoing mail using WM/Yahoo/Qwest

My Yahoo Mail downloads to Windows Mail (Vista). My ISP is Qwest. As of about 5 days ago, I can no longer send emails from Windows Mail through my POP account with Yahoo. I get the following error: The connection to the server has failed. Subject 'Test', Account: 'plus.pop.mail.yahoo.com', Server: 'plus.smtp.mail.yahoo.com', Protocol: SMTP, Port: 587, Secure(SSL): No, Socket Error: 10060, Error Number: 0x800CCC0E

My incoming mail still works. I spent about 2 hours with a Yahoo tech and about a half an hour with a Qwest tech via the internet. No fix. I have turned off the firewall and turned off the anti-virus (MSE). I have fixed registry problems. Nothing worked. I have tried with and without SSL on Port 587 and on Port 25.

Any suggestions?

To remedy this situation make sure that , Yahoo did not change any of the settings that are required to send mail. If they did not, just set your SMPT setting to be that of Qwest. You can set the return address to be anything that you like. I know this will work I have done it. The reason maybe that Qwest has stopped sending mail from Yahoo, due to spam problems

I have Qwest too ... I've had it for 3 years and have never been able to send mail or get mail (other than HotMail) through Windows Mail or Microsoft OutLook.

I think it has to do with Qwest's ports. Port 587 is a new one to me

Richc46, Thanks for your reply. I'm sorry I am a little confused by the "settings" you refer to. Yahoo has told me to uncheck SSL and to use Port 587 for STMP. Should I keep those settings and change the address to match Qwest's STMP address? Should I contact Qwest and get their address and port settings for my location and use them? Or should I do something else?

What I am saying is that if you are sure that you followed the most current Yahoo instructions, forget the yahoo instructions.
Instead
Follow the instructions for Qwest (SMPT only) and then set up the return address to say Yahoo, if that is what you want.

Thank you Richc46. I have contacted Qwest to determine what their settings are for my location. I will keep you posted, but it may take a day or two I guess.

Qwest did confirm that they are concerned about a spam problem and have decided to require incoming mail to be verified before they will allow outgoing mail. They said to try to send immediately after receiving mail and said that then the outgoing mail should work. Ugh!

Richc46,

Thank you for your help. I did contact Qwest and got their settings. I then used the Quest outgoing settings and their Port settings. My outgoing mail still wouldn't work. Prior to setting up a phone conversation with a Qwest tech I decided to go back to my Yahoo SMTP mail address for the account and change the port to 25. Both Qwest and Yahoo said to use Port 587. After I changed the Port to 25 for the outgoing mail, my test mail was sent. So I am back in business. I expect that the Qwest address would have worked too if I had ignored their recommendation for Port 587.

Anyway, you stuck with me and gave me good suggestions. Please send me a reply so I can give you a positive mark. Keep up the good work.

Carter:)
