explorer is crashing on launch

hi,

i am using Windows Vista Ultimate. i am not sure if its 32 or 64 bit but i think its 32.

the only version of explorer i can run is "Internet Explorer porvided by Dell" which is an old version. i think its the one that came bundeled with the Dell M1530 i am using.

after i run the updates to explorer 8 from the vista update manager explorer only appears briefly at full screen and then exits/crashes and i am otherwise unable to run it at that point. the samething happens if i install the download for explorer 9.

i have to uninstall the updates rolling back to the Dell explorer to get explorer to start at all. and the Dell explorer is buggy. it does not always display pages on facebook correctly an a bar on the top of the page keeps appearing which does not open the security settings as it says it will and it will not stop asking me "if i know about this settings bar"(sic) when i check "do not display this message again"(sic).

please advise.

thank you.

I realize you are talking about Internet Explorer not Windows Explorer (your desktop)
some may not realize that.
Run a system file check.
Go to start search and type cmd
Hold down shift and ctrl and press enter
In the box that opens type sfc /scannow
Tell us what it says when it has finished its scan

Hi,
I wonder if ilikfree agrees that after all that side of it is done a Malware scan and mytbe a defrag would be appropriate?

Malware scans should be done at least weekly. I scan daily with MalwareBytes and Super-AntiSpyware and my ESet Nod32 runs all the time. I also use an anti keylogger and better privacy add on in Firefox among other things Ex: MVPS Host file.
But this is not a security thread so I will stop now.

i tried the download link suggested by ilikefree. the dialog box opened asking if i want to run, save or cancel. i clicked run, the file downloaded and nothing happened. i also tried clicking save, nothing seemed to happen and i cannot find the file download by navigating through my folders or using the search box in the start menu.

i have norton 360 installed and as far as i know the subscription is payed up. i am also running comodo firewall. i think 360 does some of the stuff kesume has recommended in the background during the week.

most of the time this machine just sits in the corner and runs. ocasionally it has a problem that requires using the backup disks that were created when it was new to restore it to that just-out-of-the-box condition.

i also have a dell "pc checkup" app that never seems to be useful for anything. i think this pc checkup app may have caused the problem. pc checkup seems like a trojan horse for dell tech support.

if there is anything else i can try i would be most grateful to know.

thank you.

I think that demand is rather high right now. The RC was just released; wait a few more days and see what happens.

I wanted the OP to download the version they had if they were up to date. I didn't want them to get the 9. What to try now? The sfc scan was good. Has your security been updated, Have you told comodo to allow internet explorer.exe access to the internet.
Can you open internet explorer if you go off line
If you can set all the security settings to there defaults.
