Solved Vista laptop 64 has two versions of IE8

An update has come in to go to ie9 64 bit. This is for my husband's laptop
and he appears to have a 32 bit ie8 and a 64bit ie8 which came on the machine.

This machine is vista home premium and is classified as a 64 bit machine.
What will happen when and IF I load ie9 64 bit? I understand many of the new
PCs are putting separate versions of ie but it is very confusing.

The 64bit versions of the IE are a lot slower than the 32bit versions. They have different engines. You should use the 32bit versions.

Sounds like a good idea but the update I got is for 64 bit machines as this
laptop is said to be 64 bit. All other updates are for 64 bit.

My husband has used the 32 bit ie8 because he prefers it. Interesting that
we don't get a 32bit update for ie. I want an explanation of why they are putting two versions but no instructions as to how to handle each one.

Hi welcome to the forum. Excellent advice as always from whs .
The link below includes an article explaining the process indicated by whs.
I hope you & your husband find it of interest.
Installing 32-bit IE 9 on 64-bit Windows

Thank you.

Now that article tells me what I need to know. I'll try that plan as it makes
perfect sense to me. I you ask me, this pretty much exlains the MS approach to everything.
Thanks so very much,

I did the update on the 64 bit machine and just like you said--the 32 bit is there
and it works beautifully. I don't use it that much but I know I need it to keep
MS updates flowing.
Thanks again,

Hi Donna,
I am pleased everything went well & you managed to download with no problems.
It is indeed a fine site, & the 32bit is certainly faster than 64bit.
We are happy to be of assistance to you.
You can pop into the forum anytime, you don't need a problem!
Thank you for letting me know your progress.

You probably already know this but now MS has joined the Apple pack to make
devices and programs obsolete before they are out of the box. We Vista
folks will not be able to run Windows 8 or IE 10---only those with Win7 and
above. LOL

Yes I think it is very sad, that loyal customers seem to be 'railroaded' ever earlier to pastures new.
My own personal opinion, for what? More money!
I think you will find this present thread interesting, a few more opinions:-
