Big mistake installing IE 9!

About a week and a half ago I installed IE 9. Boy am I sorry I did.

First, I found that while it was faster, many features that were obvious and easily accessible in IE 8 are either hidden or not there anymore. For example you can't highlight, copy and past the web url of the page you're on in the address bar. There's just a short address bar with a shortened version of the web address, with a drop down menu that has the full web address, but you can't click on it nor highlight, copy and paste the link.

Second, in IE 8, in the top left corner, beside the back/forward arrows, there was a drop down arrow where you could see your recent pages and select one. In IE 9, there is no such animal. If you want to go back to a previous page, you have to keep hitting the back button multiple times to eventually get back where you want to be. Really stupid.

Anyway, I got tired of putting up with it, and uninstalled it today. No problem going back to IE 8, because it was still in my system. However, when the hard drive booted back up, suddenly I started getting a pop up window telling me "USB Device Not Recognized", and saying "One of the USB devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned and Windows does not recognize it. The location of the device is shown in bold type.
USB Root Hub (4 ports)
--Unused Port
--Unknown Device
--Unused Port
--Unused Port
Recommendation, Try reconnecting the device. If Windows still does not recognize it, replace the device."

Okay, so I double clicked on "Unknown Device" and get an Unknown Device Properties box, which tells me the Unknown Device is Universal Serial Bus controllers.

It says "Currently, this hardware device is not connected to the computer. (Code 45)
To fix this problem, reconnect this hardware device to the computer.
Click 'Check for solutions' to send data about this device to Microsoft and to see if there is a solution available.

The hardware was NOT disconnected from my computer, but I reconnected the hardware anyway, checking all connections. I still keep getting this window popping up telling me the same thing over and over ... incessantly. Now I know my 4 port USB connecter is working, because my mouse is connected to it, and it's working fine.

Looking for a resolve to the problem, I clicked the "Check for solutions" button, to report the problem to Windows, but that link went nowhere, and nothing happened.

So I started browsing around my computer to see if my devices were listed (clicked on the Start button, then on Computer to see the disk drives and other hardware connected to my computer) .... AND THEY ARE NO LONGER LISTED. I have an HP Personal Media Drive (gone from the list, so the computer won't recognize it's there), I have an HP Scanjet 4850 scanner (it's no longer listed on my computer), nor is my camera.

What the heck happened to my external devices when I uninstalled IE 9!!!?

I had to call hp ... would weren't much help at all. Then I called Futureshop, where I purchased everything. They told me to bring in my hard drive tower (it's a desktop) so they can get to the bottom of it. Darn good thing its still under the extended warranty.

For gosh sakes ... why is IE 9 such a problem child? And why doesn't it come with some warnings to customers about the mess it can throw your computer into if you are so naive as to install it ...

Can you explain to me why this happened? I sure would like to know.

Thank you ... and sorry for the rant, but I'm a little upset at the moment.

Welcome Pat
There may be a very easy solution. With System Restore Go back about 2 days before you installed IE9
http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/76905-system-restore-how.html
If your computer is not able, try in safe mode.

There is no universal reason that problems occur. Most, including myself, installed IE9 with no problem.

Wow, youre really misinformed.

The defaualt address bar is just short. You can click and drag it to any width you want, and you've always been able to copy/paste the url from the bar.

Your drop down arrow has been replaced by right clicking the back arrow button.

Everything from ie9 has been brought to ie9.... You just need to explore it more.

Thank you richc46. I followed the steps and did a system recovery back to May 12, 2011. It is still doing the same thing, the box keeps appearing and disappearing saying USB device not recognized, and my external devices are still not listed on my computer. It didn't seem to make any difference at all.

I suppose I'll have to take it in to Futureshop so they can find out what's gone wrong.

Patonb, maybe they should give people more detailed instructions on how to operate the new program then ... because I searched and couldn't figure out how to do it.

Anyway, it's a moot point because I didn't like it and uninstalled it, and I won't be going back to it ... particularly after what's happened to my computer as a result of uninstalling it.

Try going to search by the start button
in search type device manager
In device manager, look for small yellow arrows. These will indicate that drivers must be upadated and possibly the cause of the usb and other missing hardware problem
Make sure that you expand universal serial business controllers.

Hi,

It sounds as though you have the wrong USB drivers for the system. I say this because I have had the same problem!

Download the original USB drivers & install them: -

I just did that, and expanded them all, and there are no small yellow arrows anywhere.

Thing is, I had the same USB drivers when I had IE 8 and when I installed IE 9, and everything worked just fine. But when I uninstalled IE 9, everything failed and my hardware is suddenly not supported.

My desktop is an HP Pavilion a6552f PC, with Windows Vista Home Premium 64-bit, 640GB hard drive, Intel Core 2 Quad Processor Q6600, 4096MB system memory.
