I just stumbled across this tip that allows you to search using your plugins from the address bar, like you can with chromium based browsers:

Google Chrome’s Omnibar in Firefox

Only takes a few seconds to type in abbreviations for your plugins. Then you can use Customize to pull the search input off and just use the address bar.

For example if you have a scroogle search plugin with "scr" keyword, to search with it from the address bar just type
scr search term

You reclaim a lot of toolbar real estate by pulling down the search input.
