Browser won't work in startup

If I include IE in my Startup group, it hangs up with just a blank page displayed and even Task Manager won't stop it. However if I don't include it in Startup, it starts perfectly well if I then start it manually from the icon.

The same applies to any other browser which I include in the Startup group.

Any ideas? Is there a process that is not starting properly?

I'm running 32-bit Vista with all the latest updates. In case it is relevant, my antivirus is Trend-Micro Titanium, and I also have Rapport though I did try uninstall that and it made no difference.

Hello Telford and welcome , i betcha one of the services is on an auto delay type start up and is affecting the browser from starting up properly. You could look in your services and check what they are set for, or, just let the computer start up normally and then click your browser and start your browsing at that point.
When a computer is starting up, alot of processes are started , and some startup programs for example like your antivirus need the internet to acquire its updates . Microsoft also is checking for updates. Alot of stuff is going on that require the internet to let some of those programs fully load and be ready to protect your computer , before you start browsing.
Personally, i let my computer get things straight , then i just click and go.
Just a thought, hope this helps you to some degree.

I would try disabling your av and firewall, then log off, and log back in. See if it works then. If it does then there may be some delay before the browser is being "allowed" to run.

Thanks for the suggestions.

I tried disabling the Titanium AV and guess what, it reactivated all the disabled features when I restarted. There doesn't seem to be a way of permanently deactivating things (Titanium can be bit of a nanny sometimes).

So then I de-installed the AV and also Rapport. Now IE worked OK in the Startup group - although strangely enough Chrome wouldn't. So I de-installed and re-installed Chrome, and it still didn't work in Startup so I have permanently de-installed it; apparently that does happen sometimes in Chrome and there's no known fix so maybe it was coincidence.

Then I re-installed the AV and all was OK. IE did invite me to permit a couple of Trend add-ons which weren't there before, I wonder if that was the problem because I'd been having a few odd happenings since I upgraded to Trend-Micro Titanium.

So anyway it's working at the moment. I'll have to wait and see if it stays that way.

There can be few more frustrating problems tan one that requires a re-start every time you make any changes!

I'm not a big believer in "real time shield" type virus protection. Seems to me they interfere more with the system than anything else. I use scanners and image backups. On occasion I use an app that runs a particular program in a sandbox. But not the whole system. But everyone has their own way of running.

If it acts up another thing you can try is a startup delay program. For example WinPatrol has a feature to move a program from run at startup to run after a delay of so many seconds.

But I'm sure you can find other free delay start utilities. Not just WinPatrol.
