Can't start WM after cloning HDD

Hi, new to the forum and like most newby's i am looking for an answer to a problem.......

I have bought a new hard drive for my Acer Laptop and used a hard drive cloning program to copy all the data from my current HDD across via a usb-sata cable to the new drive. When i put the new drive in the laptop i get the following problem when i try and run windows mail....

"I open windows mail and it errors "Windows mail could not be started. The
> application was unable to open the Windows Mail message store. Windows Mail
> was unable to locate its message database. If you've moved the database

> initialized. "

I have tried copying the windows mail files from the old drive in to the message store along with the registry values as suggested by other search threads but i still can't solve the problem.

I also did a full recovery using the Acer e-recovery program which overwrites the c partition on the new drive, and when i tried to open WM i still have the same problem.

I have googled this problem and it is not uncommon when upgrading the HDD, but i can't seem to find a solution.

I would like to continue using WM, I have a pre-installed version of vista and have made recovery discs which i have used succesfully to install vista on the new HDD prior to using the clone software, Easus Todo Backup 4.0. I'm not sure if i could do a repair install of WM, and would i have to do this on the new hard drive or the old one, which is working fine? It's almost like something changes once the WM has been taken off the original source and placed elsewhere.

I'm a bit of a novice so feel free to 'dumb down' any replies, lol!

Thanks in anticipation, Andy

Hello Andy and welcome to the forums

Have you tried Windows Live Mail?

Windows Live Essentials: Other Programs - Get started

You may not like it, I don't know, but I thought I may as well throw it out there :)

In the mean time (I've got to sleep first though!), I'll research your problem a little.

Tom

Still haven't sorted it, have postponed using cloned HDD until a solution has been found. I could use another webmail program but prefer vista mail plus i can import saved messages too without converting

Believe it or not. After a few more hours of googling.....
And installing latest Intel Rapid Store Technology Driver 10.8.0
although Intel® Driver Update Utility said, everything was OK with previous driver set.
Problem was fixed at least for me:

Old Drive was Toshiba MK3252GSX
New Drive WD3200BPVT

First follow steps outlined at http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/62560-windows-mail-problems.html to save your current settings / mails

Do registry modifications / File deletions as outlined in Option 4

Install new Intel driver set
Reboot
Copy back your Mail folders to original local location, to be save also re-integrate Mail registry settings

Start Windows Mail and let it find old mails, which you can easily move to the correct location.

And:
After following this old-trick procedure Windows Update works again as well:
Open folder \Windows\SoftwareDistribution
Rename folders DATASTORE and DOWNLOAD by anything you like
Restart

Take this as an EasterEgg, hope it will work out for you as well:
You might like to set a system restore point manually before proceding.

Follow steps outlined at Windows Mail problems to save your current settings / mails

1. Follow Procedure '

Use Option 2 (save your mails ) plus Option 3 (save your registry settings)

2. Install new Intel driver set from http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Det...ersion=Windows 7 (32-bit)*&DownloadType=#help

Use iata_cd_10.8.0.1003.exe: provides multiple language files if you have an operating system other than English.
Reboot

3. Copy back your Mail folders to original local location, to be save also re-integrate Mail registry settings ( double click .reg file)

4. Start Windows Mail and let it find old mails, which you can easily move to the correct location.

5. Check, whether Windows Update is functioning. If not, follow this old-trick procedure

Open folder \Windows\SoftwareDistribution
Rename folders DATASTORE and DOWNLOAD by anything you like
Restart

That should be it
Good luck
