problem receiving email

Hello folks

we have been using Vista for a while with no problem, but yesterday seemingly out of the blue an error has cropped up using Windows Mail. We can still send email, but we cant receive

when we click send and receive we get the following error message:

Account: 'mail.talktalk.net', Server: 'mail.talktalk.net', Protocol: POP3, Server Response: '-ERR Authentication failed.', Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No, Server Error: 0x800CCC90, Error Number: 0x800CCC92

and a dialogue box asking for our talktalk user name and password. Entering our username and password (we have double checked them with talktalk) does nothing but bring up the same dialogue box again

talktalk have been no help, so we would much appreciate any guidance

thank you

Rich

I think that the primary cause of this problem is the old email client (Windows Mail). You may want to try the most up to date version. Windows Live Mail 2011
Windows Live Essentials: Other Programs.
There are also many other non Microsoft Clients that will do an excellent job; I like Thunderbird.

If this does not work, it is my opinion that the problem stems from a problem at the email providers server. You have to call them, again, to resolve that problem. The problem may be temporary and will be corrected when rectified by the email provider.

Hello Rich and welcome to the forums

I'm right in the middle of my A-levels at the moment, so I won't be able to reply very fast. Hopefully one of my friends here will come and help out as well, but for now, you've got me. I finish on Friday though, so if we don't have this resolved by then, I'll be able to commit more time to this.

Is there a website where you can access your email account online? I'm not familiar with TalkTalk, but I've got one for btconnect. If so, I would like you to log into this, then send yourself an email. Then open your Windows Mail and see if the email arrives. What I'm trying to do here is see if the problem lies with the TalkTalk server or not :)

Tom

hi guys

many thanks for your replies

we are still able to receive email using a browser via talktalks "my mail" but are still having the same problems with sending and receiving using windows mail

ive checked the details with the info on talk talks site and the server details, including the port numbers are correct.

talktalk say its not a problem at their end (weve spoken to them twice)

so still at a bit of a loss

if all else fails we will try the suggestion of moving onto a more up to date version of the email client

meanwhile, any suggestions welcome

thanks again

Rich
