Chrome: Java not up-to-date

I've searched and couldn't find a good answer so I'm trying here.

I rarely use Chrome but I've found that any site I go to that requires Java to load is disallowed with a message that my Java is not up-to-date. (It allows me to run it if I choose so manually.) However, my Java is current.

Can anyone help with this issue?

Thanks,
VFN

Do you have FF on the same machine? I use chromium as primary browser and FF as secondary. So FF would tend to get out of date. Drove me crazy until just for grins I updated java in FF. The chromium msg went away.

I don't have FF. The Java site tells me I'm up-to-date using Chrome when I allow Chrome to run Java there. Someone with the same problem claimed that Chrome can be buggy on a x64 OS.

On that note, if with Chrome I go to Settings -> Show Advanced Settings -> Content Settings -> Disable Individual Plug-Ins and click Details the page becomes frozen, unresponsive to scrolling up and down after a few seconds.

Maybe you could help me here and check your own plug-in deatails and tell me what you have.

Mine says:

Name:Java(TM) Platform SE 7 U5
Description:Next Generation Java Plug-in 10.5.0 for Mozilla browsers
Version:10.5.0.05
Location:C:\Program Files (x86)\Java\jre7\bin\plugin2\npjp2.dll
Type:NPAPI

Why does it say it's for Mozilla I wonder?

Do you have anything Mozilla on your machine? Maybe Thunderbird email client? All I can tell you is I've been running Chromium snap shots from version 18.x all the way now to 22.x and Java not up to date is never to do with chromium. It's always been the Mozilla program not up to date.

I would try a chromium portable (the chrome-win32.zip file) and see if that works. Make sure you back up your settings folder because if it goes up a version, then you go back to an older version, it will tell you the chromium version is incorrect. I have back up folders for a couple of chromium folders and settings folders with the version so I can just copy it back over to get back to what was already working.

I'm running Version 22.0.1219.0 Build 148722

Just search the build number here to get it:

Nothing Mozilla is on my machine.

Edited: Didn't know what Chromium was.

I should back up the settings folder for Chromium? If that's the case, where would it be and how would I do that?

chromium is the open source browser that google gets chrome from. Google adds some stuff to track you.
Anyway, the settings folders are shown here:

User Data Directory - The Chromium Projects

if you want to try a different version of chrome. In any case, I've never gotten rid of that message by making a change to chrome. Only to firefox. Maybe you should uninstall Java and install the chrome specific version?

Thanks for responding.

I don't think there's a Chrome specific version of Java. Java is only tailored to a specific OS I believe: Java Downloads for All Operating Systems

As far as making sure I back up my settings folder because if it goes up a version a problem could ensue can you tell me how that's done or direct me to to where I can learn about that?

Thanks

I would look for a Java forum. You are not the only one experiencing this. Also you might try chromium discuss on chromium.org.

The settings folder backup is no rocket science. Copy the folder to someplace else so you can copy it back if you need to. It's that simple.

Thanks for all your help.

Yeah, this problem seems to be an issue with others and Google hasn't addressed it. From looking at their board, Chrome seems to have more than a few issues which kind of surprised me.

Try installing Firefox and just let it sit there to be updated when a new Java release comes out. Not every site works with chrome anyway.
