Annoying 'You have mail' message (voice)

In the last few days, my system has started making an annoying "You have mail" repeated noise (sounds nothing like Meg Ryan). I fear the worst, as I would never set such a thing "on". Please can you tell me where I might try to remove it ? Thx.

Sounds like you're using AOL?? (dunno who it is nowadays, but it used to be Joanna Lumley in the UK)

There's an option somewhere (it's many years since I used AOL) in the AOL settings to change the voice, or switch it off altogether.

If it's not there, go to the Control Panel, Sound.
Click on the Sounds tab
Look in teh list for the appropriate option and set it to (None) - click OK out.

My ISP is AOL - I use Windows Live Mail. In Control Panel under "Sounds", it still states that the "New Mail Notification" is Windows Notify.wav (as it always was, which is fine) - this is NOT the woman's voice I am now hearing (and American, so, not Joanna Lumley !) - I assumed it was some sort of virus. I hear her when I am not even in Live Mail. I do not want to switch sound off (I use it for other things). Why am I suddenly getting a new (horribly annoying) "incoming mail" alarm, when I don't seem to have changed anything ?

Welcome
Run a full anti virus scan
Download and run a full scan with Malwarebytes.
If they are negative, I would uninstall AOL and then install again. Be sure to boot between the uninstall and the new install.

If I remember right, AOL has its own section in the Control Panel Sounds list - separate from the normal Windows ones but still in the list.
Make sure that you've found that.
(AOL UK is no longer the same company as AOL US - it was sold off about 4 years ago, and I don't believe it uses the same interface any longer, so I can't really test it)
