A member of my Computer Club has Windows Mail on a Vista setup. She had two email accounts set up and wanted to add her Hotmail Account. After the second set up screen she got the message: "Windows Live mail no longer supports HTTP mail accounts like Hotmail. Create a new account"
So I found this guide:
Select Tools | Accounts... from the menu in Windows Mail.
Click Add....
Make sure E-mail Account is highlighted.
Click Next.
Enter your full name under Display Name:.
Click Next.
Type your Windows Live Hotmail address under E-mail address:.
Click Next. *
Make sure POP3 is selected under Incoming e-mail server type:.
Type "pop3.live.com" under Incoming mail server:.
Enter "smtp.live.com" under Outgoing e-mail server (SMTP) name:.
Make sure Outgoing server requires authentication is checked.
Click Next.
Type your full Windows Live Hotmail email address under E-mail username:.
Enter your emails password under Password:.
Click Next.
Make sure “Do not download my e-mail at this time” is checked.
Click Finish.
Highlight the new account in the list.
Click Properties.
Go to the Advanced tab.
Make sure “This server requires a secure connection (SSL)” is checked under both Outgoing mail (SMTP): and Incoming mail (POP3):.
Type "587" under Outgoing server (SMTP):.
If the number under Incoming server (POP3): is not "995", enter "995" there.
But of course a soon as she got to * she got the same message. There is no option to manually configure the settings.
My workaround was to enter on the second set up screen a ficticious email address but one that would be the recognised format for a POP3 account. ([email protected])
Then you can see this account in the list of email accounts. Just click on it, select properties and complete the settings as shown. When finished highlight the account again, click properties and edit the email address to the correct hotmail acount, click Apply and OK
All done, works perfectly
