The difference between LAN and the internet

The internet is a big world where websites and such are accessible (some will dispute the differnce between internet and the 'web' but lets not get into that)

A LAN is a Local Area Network. HUGE difference.

A LAN is much, much faster. A LAN is only accesible over a limited range as it cannot be run over the internet (Hamachi sort of does this but different).

I have tennis right now so I have to go but if anyone wants to add more please do :D

so. just say i have 864kibs download speed. and i use wired connection. i get about 90kb download. if i use lan would it be like 150kb?

The network speed would be faster in this case. But if your talking about from the net, then you are still limited to to 90KB/s.

Forget about your internet speed.

A LAN has nothing to do with internet.

A LAN is a centralised connection whereas the internet is distributed.

A LAN is either 10, 100 or 1000mbps.

A LAN can be wired or wireless (WLAN if wireless).

If you are single non-networked PC connected to the net, then LAN speed will do nothing for your vroom. It's your ISP that is slow.

If for example you had a small network with 5 PCs and needed to download and copy a 1GB file to each of those PCs, you would download at 90KB/s to one PC. Then you would transfer that 1GB file at vroom speeds (8-13MBP/s real speed) to the other 4 PC's.

If you didnt have a LAN connection then you wouldnt be able to route the internet you have to other computers, I couldnt live without a LAN, heres a simple test, if you have 2 computers, connect them to your router, and swap files between them, thats your LAN speed, downloading files from the internet is your connection speed rated by your ISP(internet service provider).
You can understand what LAN means by asking yourself what it stands for, LOCAL area connection, local means at home, transfers happen at home. You dont need internet at home to use a LAN, it can be functional and practical at the same time, I used to watch DVD's over LAN, sharing the root drive and double clicking the shared folder and playing it over LAN.
Heres how it works though,

Internet ------Router-------Home computers

A LAN is a LOCAL AREA NETWORK.

NOT the internet. You can have a LAN (or WLAN) set up between your computers, but that doesn't need to be connected to the internet (i.e. Government facilities). Home networks (anything with more than one computer) as well as small (and large) business networks are all LANs. Then, there is usually a hub or router, and that is hooked to a modem, to the internet.

The transfer speed along the LAN is 10,100,1000 as stated above, but the transfer speed from the internet (upload/download) is limited by both your ISP, your router, and your cabling.

Kiddieboy, you don't NEED a LAN, but if you have more than one PC, then yes, you DO. Unless you plan to pay for a modem and ISP for each computer and NOT go Wireless.........
