Creating a partition on my main drive..

Heyy everyone, i think this is the right area!
What i want to do is add/create a partition on my boot/main drive to install ubuntu 9.10, is it possible to do this, if not, can i put it on a spare 40GB i got and dual boot it from there?

Or put in a new hard disk, and install Ubuntu onto that.

Thanks for the quick reply! Just a quick question, when i get to step1:6 im a bit confused, is the number i enter what my vista will be shrunk to, or is it what the new partition will be? i want to create the new partition as 8GB, the drive size is 149GB so the number i put in there wound be 14100?

EDIT; if i put another drive in, i wont be able to dual boot without unplugging my vista, i tried it before...

Sorry for my late reply. Set 6 enters the amount to shrink by, so the size of the new partition. So the answer for that box should be 8192 (8gb). You can put in a new hard disk and still duel boot. You need to create a new entry to boot from, or visit the one time boot menu to boot from the second hard disk.

To make a new boot entry:

Hard way: "bcdedit.exe" from Command Prompt

thats okay! okay, i done as the tutorial said and i reckon i have done it right, ive just got the Ubuntu 9.10 CD, so ill have a go at installing that on the new partition..

EDIT; found and downloaded the driver from nVidias site, just need to somehow install it with the screen being messed up...

When dealing with Linux I've found it a lot easier to make a list of my hardware, then go to the site for each distro and find out what hardware is natively supported. Life is just a lot easier if the distro goes on with the default install CD and no mumbo jumbo. I know ubuntu has this buzz but there are a lot of good distros out there. You may find one that supports your hw out of the box.

Back when I had a Pentium III I tried a few. Red Hat, Debian... but Mandrake 9.1 was almost customized for my hw since it was deliberately configured for HP(which happened to be very similar to the Gateway machine I had.) Mandrake went on smooth. No messing with drivers. The only thing broken on Mandrake 9.1, for some reason if I right clicked the desktop clock to set the time, the whole system went south. Had to use the command line date command. Other than that it was rock solid.

edit: another consideration.. Linux can use both swap files and swap partitions.. but swap partitions are a lot faster. While you are carving up the disk you may want to slice off a couple of gig for the swap partition.

I found this guid on installing the drivers manualy with ubuntu in command line style, but its not working since i have to log in for it to create the folders (home, desktop, that kinda stuff) so if i can log i reckon it would work...

EDIT!!; its working!! i took my graphics card out and plugged my spare 15 inch screen into the onboard graphics, booted to vista and downloaded the driver, and put it on my vista desktop, then i rebooted into ubuntu and put the driver in the home folder. then i turned to pc off completely and put my video card back in, booted into ubuntu command line and followed steps from a guide i googled (Installing NVidia drivers on Ubuntu) and its working!!

Glad you got it going. Especially if you want to play around with programming, there's tons of stuff you can do on Linux with free compilers, scripting language, and software. Even if you don't want to program per se, you can play around with compiling custom kernels and decide which one you want to load at boot time.

Me and my dad had a laugh trying to get this working but yeah, all i need to do is get the driver for my WiFi card and ill be away, i think i have still got it from when i tried Ubuntu 8.something out.

I was thinking of putting Ubuntu onto my AAO751h *because its so fast and boots so quick* and dual booting it with vista but im a bit worried about the warranty...

Nice. I have ubuntu also. Maybe im thinking of putting opensuse. I hardly use my linux distros though

You use grub 2.0 or configuring BCD?

Ubuntu is pretty easy to use, i only want it for the visual effects, just something to mess with when im bored... but on a serious note, i think its a pretty cool OS!
