IDE/SATA disk drive to USB adapter

Hello guys, I'm just wondering what If there is any special tool I should get to use an Internal Hard drive like an External one. My aunt is giving me this old hard drive that she took out of her W98 box and she wants me to destroy it. I want to wipe it and use it for extra storage if it's a decent sized drive. The trouble is that I only have 2 desktop PCs and the one that I can use a IDE hard disk with is the one I cant take apart.

So to sum things up, Is there some special tool that anyone could recommend, or is just doing a Google search and buying one of the first few enough to get the job done?

You can Place an Internal HDD into a Caddy and use it as an External HDD but you will need a Power supply to use it

If you are Thinking of Getting one you need to first think about what type of HDD you Have beause IDE/SATA HDD have different Power connecters when the Connect to the Mother board

Thanks for the reply, but I dont know if a caddy is what I'm looking for.
I have been looking at this on Google:
Vantec CB-ISATAU2 Storage controller- IDE / Serial ATA-150

I don't really know if it would work. It says that it comes with a power supply, but depending on the type of power supply the thing has, that's where I may need a caddy for it to work I'm thinking.

Since the disk came out of an old HP computer from when Windows 98 was the latest Windows OS, I'm going to assume that the HDD is an IDE drive.

If you need anymore info, just ask.

That will wok apart from if it is an Internal HDD you are Attaching to that connecter then you will have the HDD In open air which can collect dust and Break Easily unless it is inside a Case then Go ahead it will work

Thanks guys, Just need to wipe the data from it. after that, I don't know if ill keep it or toss it. Id be lucky if the drive could hold 10GB considering it's age.

Hmm, the best way to wipe it, i think, is to format it a few times.
When my dad gets broken server drives he uses this program/boot utility called f-disc and that completely wipes the drive.

Not sure if a format would do it. If I were to keep it, it would do fine.

On the other hand, If I were to throw it away, some skilled hacker with data recovery software might be able to access the data. From my knowledge, formatting doesn't really erase the data, it just removes the references to it and says that the data can be overwritten. Not sure if I'm right, but I wouldn't want my aunt to get ripped off if there is personal info on there.

I guess I could try putting it in the HP computer that I'm not supposed to play with while my dad is sleeping, but I don't know if he would be to happy.
He might be happy if it worked though.

Yeah, last time I had to destroy a drive, I drilled some holes straight through it, hit it with a hammer, and then threw it out the window a few times for good measure.
I could then hear the smashed drive rattling around inside it, then i took it down the local amenities and threw it into the crusher.

Job done

Ill break it If I get rid of it then... It would seem easier to wipe it with data erasing software though, I just moved so I cant really find my tools until I unpack.
