Android Backwards-Compatibility

I have for a while been in the market for an low-end android phone. The obvious choice seems to be the HTC Wildfire which can run 2.2 Froyo. The problem is, I know for a fact that it wont be able to support 3.0 gingerbread when it comes out (you need at least a 1GHz processor.)

My question is to an person who owns something currently running an android version before 2.0:

In general, are new apps (or updated ones for that matter) made compatible with the older versions (if they can physically run it of course) and is it possible to get an app store full of all the old apps that were once available for your platform??

I dont want to get the Wildfire around xmas and find that I cant get many apps as they're all turning 3.0

Thanks
Macca
