So I've been tracking a new iPod I ordered off eBay through UPS for a few days now. Today, I went online to check again and I couldn't get through to their site! I rechecked all my network settings, and every other site loaded fine. So I did a quick Google search, and sure enough, a hacker managed to get into the site that hosts UPS's domain! (as well as several other well-known companies, including National Geographic)

Apparently the hacker did some kind of DNS hack that redirects people to a different site, in this case one that just stated that it had been hacked. Let's see if this picture is clear enough to read...

Fortunately, there doesn't seem to be any malware or phishing going on with it, just that annoying message. And that's only with some of the downed sites, the rest just won't connect (at least for me).

You can still access the main sites via there direct IP addresses, (Google it if you really want to check it out) but when you try to click on any of the links on their home page, it tries to redirect you to their domain name, thereby shutting you out again. So basically the IP addresses are only good for checking out their home pages.

Just figured I'd start a chat page about this, it's pretty interesting (and kind of scary) to me. Any thoughts?

Well all I can say is wait until it is changed .... Plus changing the DNS is like changing the URL

A majority of the sites were taken down until they could contact the vendors, most are back up now(telegraph, the register), im not sure about UPS though. Just keep checking Adam

this is prolly off the subject, but the other day i had trouble getting to vista forums, every other site loaded fine all except vista, got a messg sayn server not found, a couple hours later i was able 2 get on, just wondering if any1 might know why? thanks

Well it's back up today. Still, I imagine that downtime must have have cost them a lot in lost sales and things like that.
