Back in 2010, the Library of Congress issued a rulemaking statement that exempted jailbreaking, rooting, and otherwise unlocking mobile devices from DMCA anti-circumvention laws. For all intents and purposes, this made these activities completely legal, and stopped Apple from making all those threats against the jailbreak community. In 2012, that exemption is set to expire unless it is renewed, and the EFF wants to make sure that it is.

AAAHHH! I sure hope they renew it. I jailbreak every device I own (and sometimes other peoples', too!) and will continue to do so even if it doesn't get renewed. But it's definitely nice to know that you have the law on your side for things like that. Companies (read:Apple) will continue to try to stop jailbreaking until the day that the law specifically prevents them from trying to stop it, and having it legal is a nice step in the direction of device freedom for everyone.
