Repeated BSOD

I have a Dell M1330 w/ Vista Home Premium 32bit and started having repeated Blue Screens about 2 weeks ago.

Tried running the startup repair and it gave me the following message:

Prob Event Name: StartupRepairV2
Prob Sig 1: Autofailover
Prob Sig 2: 6.0.6000.16386.6.0.6011.18000
Prob Sig 3: 3

Prob Sig 8: 2
Prob Sig 9: WrpRepair
Prob Sig 10: 2
OS Vers: 6.0.6000.2.0.0.256.1
Local ID 1033

Also got this error code at a different point

BC Code: 24
BCP1: 01904AA
BCP2: B50758C0
BCP3: B50755BC
BCP4: 8B0A707D

Also got this error code--

STOP: 0x0000007E (0xC0000005, 0x89EC3007, 0x89A06A2C, 0x89A06728) fbwf.sys - Address 89EC3007 base at 89EB2000, datestamp 4549ad9BC

Any ideas? This is getting really disruptive and I can't get any work done. I think it started when I tried to download some updated drivers from Dell. I don't even think I actually installed the update because when I tried to find the downloaded zip file with the drivers and other updates I couldn't find it. But it may have installed itself automatically or something.

thanks

right click my computer and selet properties , then click advanced system settings on the left , click settings under the startup and recovery tab , uncheck the automatically restart option and hit apply (this is just to make sure we get a proper dump file)

goto your windows folder on your c drive , in there there is a folder called minidump , look in that folder after your next bluescreen there will be a file there , if you can make that file available for download i can take a look at it for you and see if i can isolate the problem.

make sure that when windows bluescreens you wait for the memory dump to finish before restarting.

incidently i see alot of Dell users having trouble with the repair function on their PC's , seems about time somebody gave Dell a kick in the preverbials and they got it sorted

Great, thanks. I tried to access my last minidump file from an hour ago and it won't let me read it. Tried to open it with Wordpad but it says access denied. Is there a way I can open this?

My Computer

you cant mate read them with anything but the debugging tools from windows then you need the symbol package or at least know how to point the debugging tool to the symbol download , then you need to know how to read the dump file ;)

its all out there on the net mate if you want to research it , thats how i learnt it all :D

edit.the first part of my message was an edit mate , its just to make sure windows creates a dump file everytime :D

I gave up on trying to get the minidump file, could never get access.

The blue screens kept coming more and more frequently, completely random collection of error codes, different every time.

I just gave up. I booted up in safe mode, backed up my data, then reformatted my hard drive, reinstalled vista and my apps.

It was not completely trouble free, actually got another blue screen right after I thought I was in the clear, but a chkdsk seemed to clear it up and right now I am in the process of updating vista (43 of 90 updates so far to vista and office).

I will update later with whether it was a success or not.

I attribute this to accepting a bunch of "recommended" updates from Dell a few weeks ago.

That or it was a rootkit virus. It seems that some of the error codes I was getting were seen by other people with rootkits. That's also why in the end I decided to just reformat.

Thanks everyone who offered to help.

My Computer

It also may be a defective hard drive. The blue screens seem to coincide with some sort of physical movement of the computer (picking it up, someone bumping into the table, etc.). Sometimes this is the case. In others, there is no physical movement involved, it just goes blue screen. But if this doesn't clear it up I am sending this back to Dell for a new hard drive before my warranty expires in March.

My Computer

I wouldn't wait for it to "clear up" - use your warranty *now*.

yeah, you're probably right, but what a pain in the neck to send it in. do you think it matter that the reliability and performance monitor never shows any hardware malfunctions, only software problems?

My Computer

Doesn't really matter - well, it does in a way, in that there is no real HW problem - but if you have a bunch of software incompatibilities, and knowing all the junk that OEMs place on their machines, I would not be surprised if there is a newer and better version available that they simply have not told you about that will help eliminate all this...

Of course, I build my own machines, but the last time I got a hold of a machine I used Welcome | The PC Decrapifier to clean up the junk....

right. i do notice that when i reformat and reinstall from the disks all the crapola is gone...one awesome side effect. I will try it for a week and see how it goes. thanks, man

My Computer

right after my post above the thing blue screened again. It was after I had finished installing all the vista and office updates and it had tried to reboot. just kept blue screening. Tried booting from vista dvd but couldn't even do that at first, though it finally worked for a while, was able to try to repair the disk but it said it was unrepairable. I tried doing chkdsk but that didn't seem to help. one of the error messages said that there was a bad driver. it seems that something in those 90 updates is a problem, OR I think I may have a loose connector on the hard drive somewhere. in reading the message boards that appears to be a common thing for dells. it would also account for the fact that sometimes it blue screens when I pick it up (tough to figure out if that's a coincidence or not, because it blue screens at other times and doesn't always blue screen when I pick it up.) Just on a lark I tried booting it again today and suddenly it works. time to check in with Dell support

My Computer

Actually, time for you to crack open your case (with the machine fully powered off) and make sure every thing is sitting nice and tight.

yeah, probably right, not sure I know how to do that. Am chatting with Dell support right now, I'll see what they recommend. they are going to run some diagnostics.

My Computer

It could be Hard Drive or Memory related.
I would run Windows Memory Diag and Manufacturers HDD Test (Western Digital = WDDaig, Seagate = Seatools) Not dells hardware tests.
