BSOD Still...more than a year later

I have been getting BSOD since I last posted which was probably about 10 months ago. I built this more than a year ago. I'm hoping by now some of you might be able to tell me exactly what the problem is. It's driving me nuts! I can't figure it out! I've tested the RAM using stress tests and it runs just fine. I've wiggled the GFX card and I don't think it's that. I can play games sometimes fine, other times I get a BSOD. A faulty hard drive wouldn't be giving me these errors would it? Attached are two separate dumps (copied and pasted into notepad). Please help!

I would be raising the GFX card as the likely suspect. I have had a similar issue and although testing said the GFX card was fine,I put another in and no more issues. Very frustrating to NOT be able to prove a suspected fault ,especially when your gut keeps saying a particular item may be faulty. I have found that a few low-end cards supposedly rated for Vista are very problematic. Wish I could have been of more help ,mate..but often we need the actual PC to run our tests etc. as it's extremely hard to diagnose properly via a forum. If you think it is not the GFX card,it may be that you need to go talk to a tech in your area.

Thank you for your suggestion. It's been driving me mad. It's so irritating to be unable to narrow the problem down. I have an eVGA 8800 GTS 512MB KO edition (perhaps the auto-overclocking is the culprit?). I'll contact eVGA and see what they say.

You'll have to locate the dump files, zip them up, and upload them with your next post (you can't use them if they're opened in notepad - most of the output is just gibberish).

FYI - here's some instructions on how to run an analysis: Diagnosing Bsod's (originally posted 02Oct08) - Vox
But it'd be better to upload the dump files so we can "massage" them a bit to coax out more info.

My Computer

Just uploaded the Dumps.zip. I tried following your tutorial on windbg but it kept saying "Your debugger is not using the correct symbols." Also, nothing happened when I would click on "!analyze -v"

The dumps didn't show up, please try and upload them again. Whoops! Didn't notice that you'd edited your upload in the first post! :)

Will run an analysis and post back shortly.

The symbol issue requires 2 things:
- that you have the correct path in the symbols dialog (step E)
Like this -
Code:
[B]SRV*c:\symbols*http://msdl.microsoft.com/download/symbols[/B]

and you MUST be connected to the internet in order to use the path above.

My Computer

WinPcap, PowerISO, and your nVidia storage drivers are very old. Although they may not be corrupted, they may not be compatible with the latest Windows Updates.

I would suggest updating all of your drivers and programs, then update the system to Service Pack 2.

There's something wrong with the symbols in the dump files. Is this system a legal copy of Vista or is it hacked? If hacked, have you scanned the system for malware?

If the system is overclocked, please return the settings to default to see if you get BSOD's there (and if they're the same).

Below is a summary of the 2 latest dump files (the others are way, way too old - particularly the one from 2002).

My Computer

Thanks for the analysis. I had been connected to the internet when I tried to run the debugger.

The 2002 dump is actually one from when the time clock went screwy, so it's really only a month or two old. This is a legal copy of Vistax64 (legal serial number that I received directly from Microsoft) but I did use a keyless copy to install it because the legal version I got from Microsoft's Technet was bugged, and hours on the phone with Microsoft (India) didn't solve their problems. I did notify Technet (this was about a year ago).

I am currently downloading SP2 and we'll see how that works. I'm not sure why Windows Update didn't catch it? All my other updates have worked fine.

The system is not overclocked. I have had problems with this since I built it. 80% of the problems turned out to be that copy of Vista I d/l from Technet. Now my system just occasionally freezes and crashes. (Always look on the bright side, right?)

Thank you for your help! Do you know how I could check to see if the problem is my motherboard or GFX card? My GFX card is an 8800GTS 512 KO (Knockout Edition - overclocked).

There are several free GPU testing programs available...a google search will give you plenty. I have had similar issues which were GPU related and no program identified the card as an issue however replacing the card fixed it. IMHO,I think after your issues with the Vista install due to bugs etc, I would do a clean install using a disc instead of the downloaded copy you have. You have no way of knowing where corrupted files are going to show up or interfere with the system if the original installation files are obviously corrupted.

My Computer

The best test for a graphics card is to try another card.
Stress testing will often expose a problem - but not if it doesn't stress the particular thing that's causing the BSOD.

I keep a low end PCI video card on hand for testing these issues.

My Computer

Ok - I have a new graphics card, a new hard drive but I'm still getting freezes and BSOD's. Attached are the error files.

Is it the Motherboard? Perhaps the memory? This is driving me nuts! I've been able to use the machine just fine for hours at a time, but more often than not it either freezes or BSOD's.

The errors are all STOP 0x124 errors. This indicates a hardware problem or a compatibility problem (although I suspect that it could also be a driver issue - but that's less likely than the other stuff).

It's evident that you've updated a whole bunch of the drivers - but there's still some that need updating. In particular, your nVidia storage/chipset drivers are from late 2006 (right around the time that Vista was released to manufacturer's).

Here's a list of the drivers:
nvstor.sys Tue Oct 03 20:24:56 2006 - nVidia Storage driver
nvstor64.sys Sat Dec 23 11:07:42 2006 - nVidia Storage driver
hamachi.sys Wed Aug 15 19:05:08 2007 - Hamachi Virtual Network Interface Driver
nvm60x64.sys Sat Oct 07 00:31:34 2006 - nVidia nForce Networking Controller Driver
SCDEmu.SYS Mon Apr 09 23:37:52 2007 - PowerISO program

If you can't locate updated drivers for these items, please let us know the make and model of your system (or motherboard if it's a custom build). If you can't find an update for PowerISO, uninstall it.

If you're still getting BSOD's after the updates, then we'll have to try Driver Verifier. If that doesn't work, then we're going to have to start looking at hardware problems/issues.

Here's a summary of the BSOD's:

Thank you for that analysis. I ran Memtest86+ yesterday evening and overnight and it froze on me three times and then made it through 15 passes without any errors, so I gather it's not the memory. Could the freezes be caused by the motherboard? The only other hardware I really have is the optical drive and I don't think that's causing the problems...

Yes, the freeze could be caused by the motherboard - but it can also be caused by the optical driver (or almost any other component) depending upon the problem with the device.

Have you updated the drivers yet? If the motherboard is suspect, then updating the drivers is essential to rule that out.

My Computer

With any luck this will be my last post to this topic. I RMA'd my motherboard (a year later) and I've been running it since Wednesday night and so far so good! No BSOD's, although I have had two freezes, but I can live with an occasional freeze. Thank you all for your help!
