Hey everyone,

I'm new here...and I am running Windows Vista Home Premium 64-bit. It is a Dell Laptop. I've been getting the Blue Screen of death and whenever I shut the laptop lid the computer decides to restart itself. I went into power settings and changed the "lid" settings to "do nothing". That did not work. The error report is this:

Problem signature
Problem Event Name: BlueScreen
OS Version: 6.0.6001.2.1.0.768.3
Locale ID: 1033

So then I read somewhere to do a "dump check" and I did that using command prompt and after saying "your debugging is not using the correct symbols" a million times it says that:

PROBABLY CAUSED BY: ntoskrnl.exe (nt+4303b1)

Followup: MachineOwner

ANYONE HAVE ANY IDEAS? This laptop is really new and I need help.

Could you go to c:\windows\minidump, zip the dump file (*dmp) and upload it to us to look at. we could also use system specs to b e filled in (lower left corner) swo we know what kind of hardware you have.

Attached is the .dmp file. Thanks so much.

I noticed something today I think i might have figured it out...I have an external hard drive that i have connected via usb to my laptop. Today I decided to remove it by just taking the cable out and immediately the screen turned blue and the restart happened. I realized that I hadn't been "Safely Removing Hardware"--that might be the problem...any thoughts?

I ask this b/c I'm not sure. Could there be caching to the external drive? If so, removing it unsafely could create a bsod.

Can someone check this dump file for me? I started getting the blue screen. I looked at it but I don't know what I'm looking for.

While we are waiting for someone who can truely analyze this dump file I took a quick loog. It appears the igdkmd64.sys file was the culptrit. there is a known incompatibility between SP1 and intel drivers. read here

http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/T61-and-prior-T-series-ThinkPad/Vista-SP1-clash-with-Intel-display-driver-lgdkmd32-sys/m-p/17883. I would upgrade the video driver and apply sp2 if you haven't already

I had the same issue but mine was only during unpluggin Usb ports. But according to microsoft it was an update error. I also had a Dell laptop.

So you can try this for size.

Start up in safe mode
Go to the control panel
So to the programs section
Go to uninstall programs
On the task list on the left hand side there should be something that says view installed updates
click that
go to the search bar
And type kb973879
Uninstall that program.

edit~ And restart sorrry, forgot to mention that one.

And see what happens. Hopefully this will help because it seemed to help mine.

It applies to:
Vista 64 bit systems
who get a STOP 0x3E or 0x7e error
and who have the KB973879 update installed

A search for this update will show you that Microsoft has withdrawn the update because of the problems. It first manifested with HP systems, but I've seen it on others also (Dell's).

I've been having the EXACT same problem as the Topic creator! I just recently bought a new laptop and all the sudden i've been getting the BSOD and my laptop is shutting down when I close the lid. So this problem has something to do with intel drivers? What exactly do I need to do to fix this issue?

Here are my laptop's specs:
Dell Studio 1555 (purchased about a month ago)
Windows Vista 64 bit
BIOS: ver. 1.00 BIOS A06 PARTBL
4 GB of RAM
Intel core 2 duo cpu t6500 2.1 ghz
DirectX 10
Mobile Intel 4 series express chipset family (integrated card)
Main Driver: igdumd64.dll,igd10umd64.dll
