Second Monitor prevents full boot

Problem: Today I bought a second 22" widescreen monitor, an ASUS VK222H
Upon connecting it to my second monitor port and booting, windows claims it was improperly shutdown, and when picking Boot as Normal, it blue screens shortly after before reaching user login.

Removing my original monitor and plugging the new ASUS in ONLY, yielded the same improper shutdown message with following BSOD.

Either monitor will boot in safe mode, however only my original viewsonic will make it all the way to login. Everything runs fine with only the Viewsonic connected, but with only the ASUS, or with both, it blows up on me.

The BSOD was something along the lines of System_Service_Exception citing a file which I believe was nvlddmkm.sys

I did a bit of googling but did not find anyone, or any answers that had something to do with adding a second monitor, lots of answers about various graphic drivers, but none specific enough that I wanted to start trying any.

Specs:
Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 3000MHz
MB Model: ASUSTeK Computer Inc. P5N-E SLI
Chipset: nVidia nForce 650i
Memory: 8190 MB
HD: Two 300 GB
Current Monitor: ViewSonic VX2255wm-2 1680x1050
Gfx: Two GeForce 9600 GSO in SLI
OS: Vista Ultimate x64 SP1
ESET NOD32 Antivirus

Any help is greatly appreciated!

First... Did you get the latest video drivers and bios from the URLs I provided?

Second... I have an ASUS SLI mobo as well. Did you check your bios for your video card setting?

Ok.. next

Go to c:\windows\minidump , zip the dump file (*.dmp) and upload it to us we can help.

@lemur - the nVidia patch is in, 190.62, as far as the BIOS, where should I be looking at the vid card settings, during startup or is there another access method?

Also, where should I be placing teh 1301.bin from the ASUS BIOS listing, that was the highest non-beta download available.

@CrucialHoax - Actually TMM was off when I checked it with a Last Run Result comment of "The process terminated unexpectedly" but I have since re-enabled it.

Are there any options in specific under TMM I should have set?

It should start upon log on of any user. Other than that no, I don't believe so.

I'm debugging the dump now, one sec.

Every single blue screen was caused by the nVidia driver...

In the device manager anything abnormal under sound, video, and game controllers? or display adapters? I dont know which place the video card would be in. Uninstall the nvidia card completely in the device manager, re boot then install it again. See what that results in.

Both nVidia GeForce 9600 GSO's are listed under display adapters, and they are set up with the PhysX and in SLI at the moment. Drivers are all up to date on them.

Still want me to uninstall both of them? And should I take them out of SLI first?

To verify which latest NVidia version you have:

1. From the Windows Vista Start menu, right-click on the Computer listing, then left click on Properties.
2. Select the Device Manager link. User Account Control will step in, click on the Continue button to grant permission.
3. From the list of devices, click the plus (+) sign to the left of Display Adapters. Double-click on the name of your video processor to open the properties window.
4. Click on the Driver tab to bring it forward.
5. The Driver Name, Date and Version Number will be plainly listed.
6. Close the Device Manager window, and then click on OK to close the System Properties window.

If all the video drivers are up to date I don't see why it will invoke blue screens. But every single dump was caused by the nvidia display driver... Maybe the SLI setting is causing idk. I don't know too much about video cards. I just looked at the dump and it points to the nvidia driver.

Hi Crucial. I have an Asus SLI mobo. You can go into the bios and specify if graphic preference (e.g. PCI, PCI-e). I'm not sure of all options for his specific bios, but it wouldn't hurt to take a look.

I'm not sure if he ever installed the latest video driver and bios. Need to hear back.

In his last post on page one he did say all nVidia drivers were up to date.. So I'm at a loss. Unless it is the SLI, I thought SLI could cause a lot of problems depending on the configuration?

so your Asus monitor blue screens your pc whether its with the other one or on its own ........... have you not considered the fact that your new monitor may be faulty? Can you try it in anyone elses pc?

From what I'm reading, it is quite possible SLI does NOT support multiple monitors.

And then again...

Download the NVIDIA® GeForce® Release 180 driver to enable NVIDIA® SLI® Multi-monitor support, giving you the ability to use two monitors with your GeForce® graphics cards in SLI mode. Now you can easily switch between multi-monitor desktop mode and full screen 3D gaming mode without any additional system settings. Multi-monitor aware games – such as World in Conflict, Supreme Commander Forged Alliance, and Flight Simulator X – surround you with amazing graphics to immerse you in the game. In addition, you can enjoy the flexibility of having 2, 4, or even up to 6 displays based on your GPU and motherboard configurations.

Doesn't mean that it works as it should though, even more so when you consider how long it took them to add the support in the first place.

It could very well be the monitor. Because the monitor uses the display driver. Then again it could be the vid card. He could take the vid card out of the main board and it still blue screens then I would say monitor, if it doesnt, vid card set up.
