I ran a registry cleaner and I think it cleaned out the folder. I will reboot the laptop and let it do another dump. I will then post that,
I am definitely a novice at this and do not necessarily understand everything you write

My Computer

nothing was attached to the laptop that I would consider to be an IEEE device. The only thing I had attached was a mouse through a USB connection

My Computer

Also, as I can only start the laptop in safemode, I have no internet connection from it and cannot download the update directly. I can try to save it to a memory stick on another pc and transfer to the laptop. Would this be feasible?

" I ran a registry cleaner and I think it cleaned out the folder."

A register cleaner shouldn't affect any files except the registry; but, unless you have some specific reason for running it, I wouldn't recommend running a registry cleaner. They're probably OK most of the time, but there are a number of situations where they clean out things you end up needing later.

"Also, as I can only start the laptop in safe mode, I have no internet connection from it"

You can't boot into Safe Mode with Networking?

"I can try to save it to a memory stick on another pc and transfer to the laptop. Would this be feasible?

Yes, that should work.

May not apply to your situation, but worth a try. Let us know either way.

If it doesn't work, please download http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/176785-vistaforums-sysinfo-tool.html, run a complete run (should run in Safe mode), export to a file and upload it.

Best,

Ed

After several attempts I have Vista running in safe mode with networking BUT although I am connecting to the wireless hub, I cannot access the internet for some reason. I have checked the connections and the details are exactly the same as this laptop. This connects, the faulty one doesn't. Could this be a clue to the fault or just coincidence?

Hello artyman,
This is the result of your bugcheck.

STOP 0x0000009F: DRIVER_POWER_STATE_FAILURE

Usual causes: Device driver

The faulting driver is "nvlddmkm.sys", this is your NVidia video driver.

Boot into safe mode and remove this driver, try to boot normally and see if it will boot.
When you get it booted, go to this site and download this free app.

Guru3D - Driver Sweeper (Setup) download from Guru3D.com

Boot into safe mode and remove any parts of the driver that remain.
Reboot and install the new driver.
Use option two here.

Drivers - Download NVIDIA Drivers

If this will not load, you may have to go to the makers site for the drivers.

Are there any other dump files or was this the only one ?.

Hope this help, good luck and post your results.

If you have not already done this, open a command prompt as administrator and type sfc/scannow press enter and let it scan, if errors are found you may need to run this more than once, until scan is clean.

Being a novice I want to make sure I do this right. So in Device manager I go to Display Adapters and right click on NVIDIA GeForce9300M GS and uninstall driver, then follow your instructions. Bearing in mind that for some reason my faulty laptop is only working on Local network and not connecting to the web, I assume I can download stuff to a memory stick on another pc and transfer it that way?

My Computer

Also, I note in Device Manager that there are 3 alerts (yellow triangles) on the following:

Bluetooth Device (RFCOMM ProtocolTDI) #2 - the device cannot start (Code 10)
Microsoft ISATAP Adapter #2 -The device is not working properly. Windows cannot load the devices required for this device (Code 31)
Consumer IR Devices -The device is not working properly. Windows cannot load the devices required for this device (Code 31)

Looks like the easiest way forward is to restore your most recent backup image.

Unless Richard has any ideas?
