Hello pugmama05,
richc46 is correct, the easiest way is to use the Dell restore partition.

In answer to your other questions,

You don't have to install IE 8, you have the option not to install, so you can keep IE7.

1. No, you cant download the complete version of Vista from this site.

2. Unless the OS comes with SP2 on the disk, you will need to download it again.

3. The only way to clean the system is to format before you install the new OS, of course, this will delete everything on the HDD. (so backup things you want to keep).

4. Any MS drivers will be downloaded and installed when you visit MS Updates.

5. You will need to Visit the Dell site for some of your drivers, as some are Dell specific. Drivers like Video, Sound, Chipset drivers, will need to be downloaded from Dell.

6. Any specific programs can be downloaded and installed at any time.

7. All these drivers will be replaced during the OS install.

8. Again, all of these can be downloaded and installed at any time, but if you have work that cant be replaced, copy it to disk/HDD as soon as possible.

Has the CD/DVD drive ever burnt DVD's ?, you will need to check the manufacturers site or your documentation for the specs of the CD/DVD player fitted to your PC. If it has worked in the past, then provided its not a hardware issue, it will work again.

Hope this clears things up a bit for you, i would take the advice of richc46 and use the Dell "restore to factory settings" option.

If you need any more help, just ask, good luck and post your results.

well - i just sent a reply, with remaining questions./

system not going to last much longer, i don't know where it went

dang, well i another ms forum instructed me NOT TO use the factory Dell reinstall cd's as they are not full copies of OS for a clean reinstall to factory, that is why i moved on to get more input

also need to make sure that this will go back and remove absolutely everything on computer,

driver will be crisp and all components for programs and os will be where they are suppose to be right/

Welcome

Read your manual. Dell enables you to return to factory spec by hitting a certain f key during boot.

I am not sure I will be able to boot when i shut down. I have no Memory and system will not save recovery point.

also the drivers have been issues the the past 2 weeks, yesterday i had huge issues with restart.

?when i do the F-key return to factory settings...will this restore the scrambled parts of OS and programs back where they should be? It will be 'like new" no residue left over , right?

Also since my factory system was SP1, won't my reinstall disks take back to factory settings?

I don't have a boot cd, or a restore cd/disk as system has been corrupt since Christmas 09.
that is when this mess started, and the Works 9 CD from factory doesn't have any codes on it for install,.....Any insite there?

or ...read my manual, I usually do that but find that the community helps to get to the bottom of the issue faster. I have about `100 or more articles, and chapters including custom promt commands that I was getting together.

thank you- oh yes, and the drives will all stay as dell set them yes? if i use cd's from dell, which one goes 1st, 2nd, etc...they are listed above

It is suppose to return to just the way it was when you brought it home the first day and were all excited about it.

If you bought SP1 OS preinstalled, that where you will go with factory settings.

My mention of read the manual only referred to the key to hit to go back to factory settings, since I did not know it.

Drives will be like the day you brought it home.

The first thing to do is to get a Vista repair CD/DVD.
Follow this link and it will show you how to make a repair disk.

How to Make a Windows Vista Repair Disk If You Don’t Have One - How-To Geek

When they say "return to factory settings" it means just that, it will be like the day it came from the shop.
You will of course still have to re-install all the Vista updates, and if you only have SP1, the updates will install SP2 automatically.

Also, it will pay to visit the Dell site for updated drivers, or just to check that your drivers are the latest ones.
