Solved sfc /scannow

does not work, or it opens and closes instantly . .

any thoughts on what might be causing this?

Sounds like you are not using an elevated command prompt. Read this

As a further comment, my approach or Stoneys approach may or may not work. Either way a Virus Scan is always good advice. Make an AntiVirus scan plus download and scan with malwarebtes, as advised.

OK, first try did not work. Lets give this one a shot

Type services in search.. Go to 'Remote Procedure Call'. Make sure it is started and set to automatic. On another service called "RPC (something), and the default setting of this service should be "Automatic" not Manual. switch that service ON.

Then cross fingers and hope.

Have you tried to scan in safe mode ?.

i finally got it. . . i was running sfc NOT from the command prompt. . . once i ran sfc from the command prompt, the corrupted files were rebuilt, and update worked properly. .. .
