The dreaded black screen of death?

We (my husband and I) are stuck. My Toshiba Satellite laptop (Vista 64) has been doing mostly fine up until a few days ago. Suddenly it won't complete startup.

The only unusual thing I did the night before it quit on us was mount my droid to it (in order to add some itunes songs to my phone). My son was playing Spore on it the next day when it crashed on him.

When my husband went to try to start it up again for him, it went through the whole boot process--up until *just before* the blue password sign in screen appears. It remains black, however, and will not ever get to the sign in screen. Occasionally, the little blue "wait" circle (equivalent to the old hour glass) will appear, and the mouse arrow/cursor is visible and moves as you move the mouse (not completely frozen). We have tried restarting numerous times, with no luck. Safe Mode does the same thing.

We do get a message saying that windows was not shut down properly (because we've had to manually turn the computer off), but no other error messages appear at any point in the booting process that clue us into the problem.

We attempted to use the Norton disk to do a system scan for any problems--it came up with none. It did say, however, the disk was from August 2009. It would seem this would probably make it a bit outdated, as far as new viruses go.

As you might be able to tell, I am not the most technologically super-smart person. Any ideas of what this might be about, and how to fix it?

Hello ilikecows13, welcome to Vista Forums!

The easiest / first thing to try would be to do a system restore, be sure to choose a restore point before the issue started; have a look at the tutorial at the link below; be sure to post back with the outcome so we'll know how it went.

Ok. Will try it--except, will I lose any pictures, music files, etc. I have added since the restore point was created? Also, does Vista create system restore points automatically? I haven't actually manually created any system restore points by myself as far as I can remember.

Hello again.

System restore does not do anything to user files and data just system files, Vista is supposed to create a restore point (if I remember correctly) once a week; go ahead and do the restore your data will be safe.

Hello again! Thanks for the input. For some reason, when I went to a system restore, the computer couldn't find a restore point.

So (maybe unwisely?) we re-formatted the hard drive. Fortunately, much of the things on my computer were already backed up on DVDs and external hard drives, so I don't think we've lost toooo much.

But now I am running into another problem.

After reformatting, windows updates is causing even more issues. We bought the laptop about 2 years ago, and apparently there are about 90 Vista updates that have come out since then.

Last time I went to shut down, windows automatically started installing updates.. and I seem to be stuck there, as it has been saying "Installing Update 1 of 3" for about an hour and a half.

Should I do a manual forced shut down? Start in safe mode? Go buy a new laptop?...So depressing.
