My External HD is not working all of a sudden.

Alright. I am not even sure if this is the right place to put this but I am really desperate. I was on vacation and took my external hard drive with me now it says it needs to be formatted. It shows every single file on that thing but keeps saying this. It won't let me copy the files or get into them. What should I do to fix it?
I have a seagate 1tb and a 160 gb harddrive emachine computer is that helps.

Hi SVP

Right click on the HD drive and click properties. go to tools and check the drive for errors and fix them if any errors are found.

Did you use this on another writing device like a camera if so plug in the EXT HDD to the device then plug it into the computer

I went to propertise and then tools. Tried to check the drive. But everytime I hit start scan the window for it disappears. I went to sendspace and was able to pull some of my files so I know they are there.

I actually borrowed a relatives computer and it said somthing about installing the device. then the next day it said need to format the external hard drive. I am wondering now if it did something to it. My friend and I share this thing all the time without anything happening. So I am trying to imagine why it happened now.

does it have a drive letter or label assigned to it? i,am thinking faulty partition table. there are apps available to repair these but i would try a file recovery app like file scavenger or r-undelete first just in case something goes screwy.

Yes it is and it's label is K if that helps. Actually I found out someone dropped it but it was only a two foot drop and the only files corrupted are the ones that were left in use on the laptop while I was out of the room. The usb cable though was ripped out of the external and laptop so I switched it out and followed a friends advice to unplug and reboot everything. I now can copy almost every file off of the hard drive except for those that were in use at the time. yet when I go online to sendspace I can upload the files just fine with no error. But when I go to access the files via the computer the message that the discneeds to be formatted pops up.

I was wondering if the software would work to fix this or if I should upload the "corrupt" data to sendspace, redownload and add it again under a different folder to the external hard drive. I know for sure that I will always backup my data using the external hard drive, computer, and dvd data discs from now on.
