BSOD / Vista Sleep Issues

I'm having a couple of possibly related issues with my Inspiron 1720 running Vista Home Premium 32bit.

1. The machine won't wake after sleep. I have to hard-boot it to shut it down (holding power down) and then it will startup again informing me that Win did not shut down properly. When it's sleeping the lights on the keyboard are on, but nothing seems to be able to wake it. My theory is that it's crashing before sleep and not really sleeping.
2. I'm also getting rather frequent BSOD's that date back about a month. I have minidump files dating back to 6/19 (24 since then) I have attached the last 7.

Possible culprits:

  1. My AV software (ESET Smart Security)
  2. My Western Digital External Hard Drive and the craptacular Smartware Software
  3. Virus/Trojan. I ran a scan last night and ESET found and deleted some trojans that look to have infiltrated Java. Cleaning them did nothing for the sleep issues.
  4. Other software installed since June: Windows Updates, Firefox Update, .Net Updates, Flash Player, iTunes, Dropbox, various browser plugins.
Any help would be appreciated. I'm pretty geeky and make my living online so I'm not opposed to doing some pretty nasty things to get this fixed!

The dump files blame bcmwl6.sys - a component of your Broadcom 802.11g Wireless Network Adapter driver

You'll have to visit the Dell support website and enter your Service Tag number in order to locate the appropriate wireless adapter (the model has 2 different Broadcom WIRELESS cards listed)

If you can't locate the appropriate driver, please let us know the following info:
Go to Start and type in "devmgmt.msc" (without the quotes) and press Enter
Expand the Network Adapters section by clicking on the + sign next to it
Right click on the Wireless Adapter and select Properties, then select the Details tab
Then click in the dropdown box and select "Hardware ID"
Copy down the first 4 characters immediately after the VEN_ and the first 4 characters immediately after the DEV_
Let us know what they are and we'll look up the driver.

My Computer

I checked the driver to see if there was a Windows update for it and there wasn't.

So I uninstalled the wireless device using the Device Manager, rebooted and let windows find and install the previous/default driver.

Still crashing.

I checked the Dell website and there is an update to the driver, but I had it installed previously so I'm not sure that will fix. But I can try again if needed.

Current driver version in Device Manager says 4.60.0.0 (11/21/2006)

I followed your instructions and here is the hardware ID for my Broadcom 440:

14E4 170C

That's the first 4 digits after VEN and the first 4 after DEV.

Let me know my options. I have attached the last 4 minidumps for reference.

My Computer

The Broadcom 440 is the wired connection on your laptop. We'll need the numbers for the wireless device. If you can't locate it, just download both wireless drivers and try to install them both.

If you've previously tried to install the wireless driver and it didn't fix things, then uninstall the wireless drivers first, then install the freshly downloaded driver. This will increase the likelyhood that the corrupted portion of the driver will be replaced.

BTW - the driver is the most likely cause of your problems - but not the only possibility. One other possibility is that the wireless card itself is broken. Fixing that will require removing the card from the laptop (if it's not built into the motherboard).

My Computer

Sorry for the confusion. The wireless card is a Dell Wireless 1395 WLAN Mini-Card.

Driver Version: 4.1.7.0.25.17

Hardware ID: 14E4 4315

I will attempt an uninstall/reinstall of the drivers.
