Solved Problem with the Registry. Please Help!

Hello,

I am having problems with my registry.
I am using Windows Vista Home Premium 32bit

I'll explain:

Trying to install somes plugins for an Audio software, I changed in "Regedit" the permission of "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes"

After changing that my computer became very strange.

For example:

I can't see anything in the regular Control Panel of Vista, I have to select Classic Mode.

Many programs that appear when I right clicked on a file are missing.

The icons of the Hard Drive had changed and the DVD Drivers now says "CD"

My Messenger is not working.

The Windows Update is not working either.

It seems that when I changed the permission, it all became a mess.

I dont have a back up registry file nor a restore in time.

Please I ask for help for a solution to my problem. I am desperate.

Please help :(

Thank you.

Restart your Computer

and press Either F10 or F8 or F2 Repeatedly and see if a Restore process appears
If so restore the OS

If not then Post Back

Hope This Helps,

Is that proccess going to affect any of my files?

Thanks for all the help :)

Searching over the internet I have found an interesting suggetion which says it will turn back all the permission in the registry to default.

Here are the instructions:

 • Had some problems with my registery permissions a while ago, I couldn’t delete any thing any more, so I was looking for something that could reset my registery permissions to defaults. Here is the solution that worked for me If you want to reset the entire registry permissions to defaults follow these steps
Note:- Before Doing any changes to registry plesae take a backup
and start your changes

First you need to download SubInACL from http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...56-D8FE-4A91-93CF-ED6985E3927B&displaylang=enhere
SubInACL is a command-line tool that enables administrators to obtain security information about files, registry keys, and services, and transfer this information from user to user, from local or global group to group, and from domain to domain.
Create a file with the name reset.cmd under C:\Program Files\Windows Resource Kits\Tools folder
Now you need to Edit the reset.cmd file and add the following lines
subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE /grant=administrators=f
subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_CURRENT_USER /grant=administrators=f
subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT /grant=administrators=f
subinacl /subdirectories %SystemDrive% /grant=administrators=f
subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE /grant=system=f
subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_CURRENT_USER /grant=system=f
subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT /grant=system=f
subinacl /subdirectories %SystemDrive% /grant=system=f
Save and exit your file
Now you need to open command prompt run the following command
cdcd “C:\Program Files\Windows Resource Kits\Tools”
after this press enter and enter the following command
reset.cmd
after entering this please press enter
fter a few minutes by processing subinacl, the permission will be reset
Please tell me if that would work or not :)

Yes it should work. And yes your files will be deleted if you recover form a Partiotion so back them up to another HDD or Flashdrive

Also before you take those steps Backup your Registry

1. Open Regedit
2. Click on computer
3. Then Click File> Export and save the Registry somewhere. Windows explorer may stop responding but this is normal it is Just extracting the Whole Registry

Hope This Helps,
Josh

Thank you Josh, but just to be sure, doing that process with SubInACL will work and all will be back to normality again? Will my files my deleted if I do that?

I suppose if that process works, I won't need to format my computer

Also, do you know what has caused this problem and how does changing the permission to the "Classes" entry affect Windows's performance?

By the way, I have already made a backup of my actual registry. It's a 300 MB .reg file.

Thank you for your replies and sorry for being such a Newbie.

This shouldn't mess with your Files but if it currupts vista then you will only have two options.

1. Recover from your partition deleting all of your files

2. Buying a new computer and placing the HDD into a caddy allowing you to recover your files

Hope This Helps,
Josh

Hi,

I'm writing this message to let you know that I solved my problem.

Following that process I described you, I was able to fix all of my issues.

Now my computer is running as good as new. I didn't needed to format it.

Anyways, I learned my lesson to never mess with the registry and to always have a backup.
That's why I already copied all of my files to an external hard disk and made a restore point.

Now you can make this post a solved problem.

:)

Congratulations Glad you Got it Sorted :) I would recommend making a Backup of your Registry every month and especially before you mess with it ;)
