Crash that prevents me from starting my computer back up.

My computer will sometimes power down with power still going to the motherboard with apparent lights still emanating from it. When i try to start it up after this happens it will turn on for maybe half a second then instantly quit, I usually have to wait about 10 minutes before I can turn the computer back on. I built this system myself two years ago and had the same problem? I think it could be the graphics card? its a 9800 gtx. My powersupply is 700w im running an Intel core duo e8500 @ 3.16Ghz (2 cpus) ~3.2Ghz. with 4 gigs of ram. The motherboard is an xfx nForce 780i. And of course vista ultimate 64 is my operating system. Thanks!

Actually,I was truly thinking of graphics card or driver. My clue was that the screen goes dark right on boot.
Go to device manager and get the information about your graphics driver, also make sure that you have all card updates, then

search Google for the name of the driver
- compare the Google results with what's installed on your system to figure out which device/program it belongs to
- visit the web site of the manufacturer of the hardware/program to get the latest drivers (DON'T use Windows Update or the Update driver function of Device Manager).
- if there are difficulties in locating them, post back with questions and someone - will help you search Google for the name of the driver
- compare the Google results with what's installed on your system to figure out which device/program it belongs to
- - if there are difficulties in locating them, post back with questions and someone will try and help you locate the appropriate program.
- - The most common drivers are listed on this page: Driver Reference
- - Driver manufacturer links are on this page: Drivers and Downloads
To remove any left over driver remnants, especially from graphics cards, use driver sweeper Guru3D - Driver Sweeper

I have the most recent driver which is the 7/9/2010 driver date. My card is "NVIDIA GeForce 9800 GTX/9800 GTX+. I think it may be overheating maybe? would the computer shut down and not turn back on if it was getting too hot... say around 78 degrees Celsius?
