User accounts gone!

First, I apologize if this is the wrong area for this thread. Second, I'm typing this on my DS, so sorry for the brievity and any errors.

A while ago I started having problems with viruses. Last night I ran AVG scan in safe mode on the advice of a friend. This morning I restarted, and have a terrible problem.

My log in screen has no user accounts. Normally it has me and a guest. Instead, it says "other user." If I click on that I get a name/password prompt. No matter what I enter, it says "the specified domain either does not exist or could not be contacted." It's also stuck in 800x600 resolution.

Thanks for any help.

Unfortunately not, but at this point i don't care about my music and games. I can reinstall and rerip later. Unless you mean like vital windows files, in which case just the automatic restore points and the like

My Computer

Create this and then try to do a system restore
If you are able to get to repair in the normal fashion, use that method.

You "should not" lose your documents, but anything is possible.

Using this tutorial try to get to system restore and then go back 5 days before the virus hit. Be sure to go back before the virus or it all starts again.

if you cannot do that try the complete restore. If you can get there without the DVD you can do that, also.

But system restore, before the virus is the best way. You said that you could not get there, before

System restore, you should not lose your documents
Complete restore you will

OK not a problem
Do you have a vista install DVD or did any sort or DVD, for repair come with the computer?

If you have a DVD that came with the computer, that will bring you back to factory specs. LIke the day you brought it home.

Im going to be offline for the night, so I will give this to you now.

If you can get a cmd prompt by typing cmd in search and then right clicking, then typing
sfc /scannow that may fix the computer. If errors are found try several times. It fixes a few at a time.
time. If that does not work, see below.
http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/66978-system-files-sfc-command.htmlonly

Every computer has a way to restore factory specs, a way to make it like the day you brought it home. No pictures or your vacation, no documents, no updates etc.

First way is a recovery DVD, that may have come with the computer. If you have that just BOOT from the DVD. Make sure you boot from the DVD and not the OS. You may have to adjust the BIOS. I will show you how that is done
http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/205005-boot-priority-change.html

The second way, if you did not get a recovery DVD, is to push certain F buttons. Sometimes f11. While the compter boots. You push the key rapidly and contiually, until you get to the BIOS screen. This may, however, bring you to the repair options that you have already tried, however.

You do have one or both of these methods. If you do not have the DVD, using the brand of your computer eg, Dell xps420, you google factory specs with the name of the computer.. It is in your computer manual, too. If that is not long since lost. Post when you come on, if I am here I will answer or I will tomorrow.

Read my last two posts. I think i was adding as you posted. If sfc command works you do not lose your stuff. You may not need the recovery DVD

EDIT: The recovery DVD that comes with the computer is not the same a regular install DVD.

Alright, a friend of mine gave me a spare HDD and disc with ubuntu on it. I've backed up my files. Now, what can I do. I don't have a recovery disk from my PC, btw, just the one I made earlier.

OK, not many options left, in fact this is it.

It is my understanding that you do not have an install dvd that came with your computer, because the OS came preinstalled when you purchased the computer. You are not able to use the "last known good configuration command, that is accessed by pressing f8 continually at boot. When you boot the computer you reach a longin screen that shows, just other account, which is non functional. Steps 5 through the end, shown in this tutorial have either been tried or are not possible

Having tried all these options all the remains is that you contact the manufacturer of your computer, explain the situation and ask for a install dvd. Usually they will comply and send you one for cost, about $25.00.
