welcome screen & logon screen or anything after that won't show

A few days ago, my laptop froze the first time ever and I had to restart it (using the power button). When I then started it, everything would go fine until after the Microsoft loading bar thing (when the screen is black and the mouse is in the middle). I can move the mouse at that point, and if I press Caps Lock, the light goes on, but it doesn't move on to the welcome screen. I left it on the whole night to see if anything happens at all, but it doesn't move. Alt+ctrl+del doesn't work. Safe mode loads the welcome & logon screen, but after that the screen is black with safe mode written on top and corner and the mouse is there and you can move it, but nothing else shows up.

What's funny (well maybe not) is that I installed ubuntu a while back (the -install as a program on windows- version) to try it out and see if it's that different and I kept forgetting to uninstall it and when I select Ubuntu as my operating system when I turn on my computer, it works :D
Yea, Ubuntu works perfectly. So i can access all my files and basically do almost everything on here, but I'd still miss Windows because of some programs ..

I tried repairing the computer (i inserted the vista disk), but it found nothing. I did a memory test (basic), but it's all nothing. :/
I did a "check disk for errors" test and it shows nothing and when the computer turns on after that, the windows loading bar takes forever and when it reaches the blank screen with mouse phase, it stays there for a while and then restarts.

So...
Any suggestions?
I should probably mention this too: I dropped the laptop from about 1 meter the night before it stopped working. But after it fell, I worked on it for about 2 hours more and it worked fine. Then I hibernated it (as usual) and when I turned it on the next morning, the problem appeared. But the fact that ubuntu works suggests that it's not a physical computer problem, or is it?

Thanks for all help. :)

See if you can boot in safe mode. If so do a system restore from the point that you tried to improve the system that was developed by Microsoft.
If you can, do the system restore from normal mode, if not try it as said above.

Jasontee82,

Please start a new thread to post your question - even if your problem is similar it is most likely different in some or even many ways. This thread is for blip29. If we try to deal with both situations in the same thread, it will soon become very confusing as to what reply applies to what situation and that won't help anyone - it may even cause inappropriate suggestions or misunderstandings because the situation being addressed isn't clear or is mistaken.

Thanks for understanding. Just copy what you posted and paste it into a new question - but this time add the screenshot file as an attachment to to the post as we cannot see what you tried to add directly into the post itself. Someone (or many people) will try to help you when you post your separate question in a separate thread.

Good luck!

I can't do system restore because I can't access Windows :/

I can't uninstall ubuntu because I installed it on Windows - like a program :D
Like they have a version to try it out and I installed that and I never had a problem.

I have no problem reinstalling Windows if you think that'll help. I just don't want to reinstall and then realize that it's a hardware problem.

So my question right now is, do you think this is a software problem and reinstalling windows would solve it?

Blip,

It's much too early too tell if the problem is hardware or software - we simply don't have enough information. I've seen situations similar to this many times before and the problem has been either or both. The thing is, with such limited access it's difficult to test for anything - but we'll try what we can before resorting to a re-installation (since at this point we have no evidence pointing to a hardware device failure or if it is, which device or devices it might be - it's certainly possible but there are no messages or issues to say so one way or the other at this point). Maybe these procedures will resolve the problem or at least help us identify the source of the problem.

You can probably do a System Restore if you boot to a disk rather than try to do it through Windows on the hard drive. Here's how:

Do you know when this problem began? Try a System Restore to a point in time BEFORE the problem began. Here's the procedure: http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vista/using-windows-vista-system-restore/. Be sure to check the box to show more than 5 days of restore points. If the first attempt fails, then try an earlier point or two. NOTE: You will have to re-install any software and updates you installed between now and the restore point, but you can use Windows Update for the updates. Use the recovery disk (if it includes Recovery Environment options) or the genuine Vista Installation Disk. if the system prompt doesn’t work. The recovery disk works a bit different from the above procedures but if you follow the prompts from the System Restore menu option with the above information you should be able to restore with no problems.

If you don't have either disk, you can make a bootable Recovery Disk using http://neosmart.net/blog/2008/windows-vista-recovery-disc-download/ along with burning software like: http://www.snapfiles.com/get/active-isoburner.html and, of course, a blank CD (perhaps made on a different computer - maybe the one you are using to post here).

To boot to the CD you may need to change the BIOS to make the CD-drive first in the boot sequence. To do that, wait for the screen that tells you the F key to push to access the boot menu or boot setup. Push it quickly. Make the changes, save your work, and exit. Put the CD in the drive and reboot. When prompted, push any key to boot from the CD.

If that doesn't work, try the following using the same disk (you will not have to boot into Windows to do these steps) to help us identify possible causes and perhaps even to resolve the problem:

If the System Restore doesn't work, do a Startup Repair by booting to the genuine Windows Vista Installation Disk (or one you can borrow from ANYONE) or from a Recovery Disk with recovery options included on it (like the one mentioned above). Here's the procedure: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial148.html.

If that doesn't work, then let's check some of your system files using Command prompt on the disk:

If using the disk, cd to C:\Windows\System32. Type sfc /scannow and enter and let it run. It will scan and try to fix some of your system files. Hopefully it will complete with no corruption it could not repair (if there is such corruption post back here or try to analyze it to find the problem file(s) using http://support.microsoft.com/kb/928228. Try to post any corrupted files here so we can see if they can be repaired with good copies from the installation disk (unless there are too many). Do you have a genuine Vista Installation Disk?

While in Command Prompt, type chkdsk /f /r and enter and let it run. It will want to schedule itself to run at the next restart. Answer yes and then reboot to run the program. It will scan and try to fix any corruption or bad sectors on your hard drive and mostly remove that as a potential cause.

I hope this helps. That's about all we can do with the disk at this point if you can't access the system in normal mode or in safe mode. We'll examine the results of what you tried (please post the exact word-for-word results from the SFC and chkdsk procedures as well as any message that Startup Repair generates). Then we'll see if there's anything else we can try or recommend.

I hope this helps.

Good luck!

Lorien, thank you for your reply! Yes, I have a genuine Vista Installation Disk. I'm also using the same computer right now, but I'm using ubuntu which as I said, works perfectly :)

I guess my computer is pretty messed up because nothing worked :( My windows is in Slovenian and half of error messages are in Slovenian, so I can't give word for word error messages, but I can translate and I took pictures. :)

I tried System restore, but an error message showed up saying that there is damage on data system C: and that before I can restore, I have to check for errors. There was a button below saying "Check for errors" so I clicked it and it checked for errors. (picture)

Well, then it checked for errors (picture). It found some errors (part 1 part 2) and then it supposedly fixed the problem (picture). I tried system restore again and it didn't work this time, giving another reason (picture).
It said that system restore was unsuccessful and that system files and settings in the computer weren't changed. It said that restore wasn't successful because of an unpredictable error on a V/I device and then it said the error number in parenthesis (0x8007045D).
It said that I can try again and pick a different restore point, so I did and the same error showed up again.
After that, all my restore points were gone (it said that I had no restore points).

I gave up on system restore and tried Startup Repair. No luck again - it told me that it found no errors and that I should check any new hardware/devices that I plugged in recently and try starting without them. I haven't added/plugged in anything new recently. Just my mouse.

Then I tried Command prompt. It wouldn't navigate. When I try to move to the directory, it just stays at X:/Sources
Maybe I'm doing something wrong (please tell me if I am), but isn't it supposed to change? (picture)

So... Can I try anything else before I take it to the repair people?
Thank you! :)

UPDATE!

After doing what I wrote in the previous post, I started ubuntu to go online to type it up and the resolution was a bit weird - not the same as before, more zoomed in. I didn't think it was anything special so I ignored it.

Then I decided to try Windows again and for some weird reason, IT WORKSS!
An error message showed up for some programs though (maybe the chkdsk fixed something because it's the only thing that was basically done) and a message showed up saying that system restore wasn't completed.

But other than that, so far, everything works!
I don't want to turn my computer off, though, because I'm afraid it won't turn back on.

I just want to hear your opinions on this?
THANK YOU :)
