This is the first time that I've ever tried to work with Zip files, and I hope that I've given enough information to try and resolve this now daily event.

In the last week or so, a daily BSOD event happens because Windows shut down unexpectedly. A snip summary view of the event from Problem Reports and Solutions is as follows;

BSOD - Windows shut down unexpectedly Tue07Sep10.JPG

The minidump file mentioned in the summary is as follows;

View attachment Mini090610-01.zip

Other files that probably give greater details are attached here;

View attachment 20621

View attachment Windows_NT6_BSOD - System Health Report.zip

I am at a loss about what to do next.

In addition to the information in my System Specs below, I add the following -
- Age of system - 3 years [installed OEM July 2007], therefore no installation or recovery DVD available to complete a clean reinstall.
- HDD has been increased from that installed at OEM from 120GB to 320GB.
- RAM has been increased from the 1 slot x 1MByte OEM installed, to 2 slots x 2MByte RAM.
Other information readily available via snips of Piriform 'Speccy' specification data, if needed.

The BC code given indicates that this is a driver problem the driver mentioned is given above.
You should update all old drivers. Since the number seems to be rather overwhelming, after updating the driver mentioned you can use the driver verifier, if the BSOD continue. In any event drivers dated prior to 1/1/08 should be updated as they are problems just waiting to happen.

If overclocking restore normal settings
SFC /scannow
System Files - SFC Command

Run a full anti virus scan and dowload and run a full scan with malwarebytes.

Update outdated listed drivers. If I have inadvertently listed any Microsoft Drivers, they can be ignored.
Enable the Driver Verifier
http://www.sevenforums.com/crash-lo...-driver-verifier-identify-issues-drivers.html

How to Find Drivers
search Google for the name of the driver
- compare the Google results with what's installed on your system to figure out which device/program it belongs to
- visit the web site of the manufacturer of the hardware/program to get the latest drivers (DON'T use Windows Update or the Update driver function of Device Manager).
- if there are difficulties in locating them, post back with questions and someone - will help you search Google for the name of the driver
- compare the Google results with what's installed on your system to figure out which device/program it belongs to
- - if there are difficulties in locating them, post back with questions and someone will try and help you locate the appropriate program.
- The most common drivers are listed on this page: http://www.carrona.org/dvrref.html
- - Driver manufacturer links are on this page: http://www.carrona.org/drvrdown.html
To remove any left over driver remnants, especially from graphics cards, use driver sweeper
http://www.guru3d.com/category/driversweeper/

After performing all of the above, post back with any new BSOD reports, or indicate that the attempted repairs were successful.
If any links do not work, if clicked, please copy and paste to browser address bar.
Remember that several attempts may be required before we can solve your BSOD problem. These reports are not definitive but merely point the way to a solution.

Thanks Richard for all the effort that you've obviously put into this. To be quite frank, I've never attempted to do anything like this before and therefore it all appears rather daunting to me. I need to put down what I believe you are advising me to do, and then have you either confirm that I'm on the right track, or quickly pull me back on it.

For starters, I ran sfc/scannow and it gave a clean bill of health with no integrity errors or failures. So that is out of the way. Further, I am not competent enough to even look at carrying out any overclocking of my system, so that's been untouched, and should still be at the default factory settings, whatever they are.

However, I don't understand what you want me to do with this bit of advice and the link;

Gearaspiwdm.sys file description
Productname: GEARAspi
Description: Filter Driver for 2k and XP

Company: GEAR Software File size: Various
Driver updates - GEAR Software

I've had a read of the articles, and they all mention Windows 2000 and Windows XP only, but since this has appeared as a problem in the Logs I sent, then obviously this is also an important part of Windows Vista setup. So, just what is it that I'm supposed to do with this information??

You will also see that I've had a long ongoing problem with the Reliability Monitor - System Stability Chart. This has been unserviceable since the 4th September 2010 [when I believe an Acer tech from a remote location, did something to knock this out] and previous posts to the Vista Forum on this particular issue, have drawn a blank. A snip of this problem is here;

Reliability Monitor - Disabled System Stability Chart - ceased operating 04Sep2008.JPG

Under your heading of "Outadated [sic] Drivers", and in what you have subsequently written, I understand your advice is that I scroll to each Driver listed before 01Jan02, and do an update for each and every one of them? That's something to the order of nearly 100 drivers that you're suggesting that I update? Correct? When searching for updates, I understand that I should be using the Driver name to do the search and find? Correct?

I'm presuming that by using "BC", you mean "Bug check"? Correct?

I've still a number of points to try and understand from your post, and will raise these as I get my head around them.

Cheers

You can rest assured that I will do everything that is possible, from across the miles, to assist you. We will get this done. Actually, you have a relatively simple problem to resolve.

I have posted, here, the part of the dump report that I did not give you initially, since I felt that it was not needed by you to resolve the problem.
I have made the important portion BOLD.
The problem is a driver. Driver problems will not show up in SFC /scannow.
This prarticular driver is used for your ITunes.
We have several methods to resolve the problem

1)You could completely unistall ITunes, making sure that the driver is also uninstalled. After you uninstall, with a cmd prompt type driverquery and look for the driver in question. If it is gone, you should not get any more BSOD, If still there post and I will tell you how to make if impotent (in this case it is a good thing). If you do decide to uninstall. Make a system restore point first. If the problem is not resolved after uninstalling, you may want to reinstall with System Restore. Although quite clearly the cause in your situation. Sometimes when corrective action is taken a whole new bunch of reports appear with new causes for the BSOD

2.) You could try to update via device manager. Go to device manager, look for the driver then just select update. This is not the best way, because MS will just give you an off the rack, one size fits all driver. You may have to click on view at the top of device manager to see hidden drivers

3)YOu could follow the initial instructions that I presented and go to the website of the manufactuer and download the driver. This is the best way, if you still want itunes.

As you I am here to help and enjoy solving problmes and helping others. This is especailly true in your case, since you have helped so many, yourself, bottom line dont be afraid to come back with questions.

Thanks Richard for getting back to me and my muddle,

Progress has been nil as I am at a loss with the search for this driver in Device Manager. I did do an elevated command prompt for driverquery, and sure enough found it there. That fact established.

At Device Manager, I selected View from the Taskbar, and from the drop-down Menu, I have a dot alongside Devices by Type, and a check [tick] alongside Show Hidden Devices. Problem is that I can't see anything that even remotely looks like GEARAspiWDM.sys. Can you please point me in the right direction to find the driver, that is, what should it be listed under? Or am I on the wrong page to even begin with?

I can follow directions in shorthand, if that helps you, for example;Click on Start>type Device Manager>In list under programs, right click Device Manager>Open>at UAC, Continue>At Taskbar, select View>from drop down menu, select Devices by Type, and etc, etc.

While I wait for you response, I will keep searching for the answers, however, could this mess be fixed with a straight clean uninstall of iTunes, to be replaced by an updated version, that I see is available to me right now?

I also have Piriform's CCleaner, which I always go to after any uninstalls, and in Registry Integrity, there run a scan and clean out any residue of the uninstalled item. Custom System Restore Points are always created as a matter of course before any changes are made [Uninstall and Install] to my system.

Thanks Mate.

Tony.

If you read my post, an uninstall is one of the 3 main solutions.
See method 1 above
That would probalby be the best solution. Especailly as you say a new version is currently available.
After the new install, make sure that driver no longer shows in driverquery.

If you are going to uninstall, use revno and then ccleaner.

As far as the other old drivers, they should be up to date, but if you do not get any more BSODs when you uninstall the one from Itunes, the others could wait, but its really easy, to do. You do 3 a day.
After we solve this problem, I would be very happy to find one or two drivers for you, showing you every step that I take.

I was curious as to the extent of the ITunes problem and to my surprise found this:
iTunes 8 Causing Huge Problems, BSOD for Vista Users

If this is the current version, I suggest that you just uninstall and enjoy your computer without ITunes.

Great investigative work Richard, and thanks for posting the link.

........there is certainly no need to repeat this statement, and I am in the process of taking this sound advice - right now.

For once MS has clean hands on this one, and darts should be directed at Apple who it would appear, are responsible for upsetting the cart in this instance of BSOD.

With the time available to me, things have been progressing slowly and with caution.

After creating a custom Restore point, under Control Panel>Programs etc., I did an uninstall of iTunes, then removed the shortcuts from the Desktop and Quick Launch. As Administrator, I then ran Piriform's CCleaner and did a scan in Registry Integrity. That threw up 75 registry values associated with iTunes that were still hiding in the system, and these were removed. A reconfirming scan in Registry Integrity again, came up with a clean Registry.

In addition to the uninstall, and for my own satisfaction, I have completed full scans using 'SUPERAntispyware', 'Spybot-Search and Destroy' and Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware. I am pleased to say that each of these returned an absolutely clean bill of health - not one infected file amongst the lot of them.

So far, so good. So back I go to an Elevated Command Prompt and do a search for /driverquery and this is the result, the driver in question is shown as still in my system, here;

BSOD - Windows shut down unexpectedly 2 Tue07Sep10.JPG

[a little of Lake Ianthe in the SW of South Island, New Zealand is included to make the snip less boring]

OK. I am now in need of concise, and for me, easily understood advice about how to remove this apparently last hurdle in the uninstall process of iTunes.

Cheers, Tony

First be sure to report back when this is solved, so that we can rejoice together and that others may be helped. I bring this up now because we are getting close to that day :D

Lets try the easy way. The driver is old and specialized, I thought about it and very likely will not cause another problem. Use the machine, if it is ok, just use it. If you get new BSOD's just post and we will rid you of that driver.

Thanks again Richard for your patience and help here.

I will take your advice, and if still plagued by the pretty coloured screen, use what you have suggested with your link [name excluded to protect the innocent, and to preserve the comatose state of the great unwashed, over at Windows 7 Forums].:rolleyes:

Further, I shall do all I can to preserve the integrity of your stealth and cunning, and if necessary will only run the unmentionable application, in solitude, deep within a coal-mine, at midnight, on the night of a dual lunar and solar eclipse.;)

Cheers Mate, and I will be back to report further on any variation to outcomes.

Tony

Yes, please keep me posted and if that last post does not work, there is an easy way to get rid of the driver. Just change the .sys to .bup. But dont worry about that now,I think its a done deal.

And I thank you for the rep. Its such a great feeling dealing with a member one on one, and problem gets solved
