Vista won't boot following update

I'm running vista x64 on an HP dv9000. Every time I install the updates and reboot my computer gets stuck on the loading screen, with the green bars running endlessly across the bottom of the screen. I've stepped away for hours at a time and come back to find that the system is exactly as I left it. There's apparently little to no hard drive activity during this stage. Start-up repair never finds any issues, and the only solution I've found is to do a system restore, which has its own problems. I've had this problem for about 8 months now and I have about 30+ uninstalled updates. What's the best course of action here?

EDIT: Ignore the stuff below. I didn't see that you used start-up repair and doesn't find the issue.

Do you know how to boot into Startup Repair in Vista?
If not, here's everything about booting into Startup Repair:
Troubleshoot Startup Problems with Startup Repair Tool in Windows 7 & Vista - How-To Geek

Scroll down to Startup Repair in Vista
Note: Startup Repair doesn't fix virus attacks nor hardware failures.

EDIT: If you don't have a Vista Install DVD, then press f8 after the manufacture logo and press "Repair Your Computer". Follow the on-screen instructions and then choose Startup Repair.
