Crash when USB mobile broadband dongle plugged in

Hi all,

I've got a Huawei model E1752 USB mobile broadband dongle, and whenever I plug it in to my laptop, the computer restarts continually until I unplug the dongle.

I'm running Vista Home Premium 32-bit, which is the original OEM OS installed on the system. The system is 2 1/2 years old, and I have never reinstalled the OS (I'm embarrassed to say I wouldn't know how).

I've followed the instructions in jcgriff2's BSOD sticky at the top of the forum, and hopefully was able to include all the necessary information. I'd appreciate any help anyone can provide.

I am only running the last 5 memory dumps (the one's from October).

Interestingly, the 5 dump files blame snapman.sys - a component of Acronis True Image
Please uninstall Acronis, then try the dongle to see if that fixes the problems.
If it does, please install a current version of Acronis that's certified to work with Windows Vista.

Please go to C:\Windows\System32\drivers
Copy the following 2 drivers to your Desktop ( ProDscFS.SYS and ProDscFT.SYS )
Then zip them up and upload them with your next post.
These are unknown drivers that are present in the crash dump and there is no information available about them.

Also, please remove or update these older drivers that were loaded at the time of the crash. Don't use Windows Update or the Update drivers function of Device Manager.
Please use the following instructions to locate the most currently available drivers to replace the one's that you uninstall OR remove:
How To Find Drivers:
- I have listed links to most of the drivers in the code box below. Please use the links there to see what info I've found about those drivers.
- search Google for the name of the driver
- compare the Google results with what's installed on your system to figure out which device/program it belongs to
- visit the web site of the manufacturer of the hardware/program to get the latest drivers (DON'T use Windows Update or the Update driver function of Device Manager).
- if there are difficulties in locating them, post back with questions and someone will try and help you locate the appropriate program.

- - The most common drivers are listed on this page: Driver Reference
- - Driver manufacturer links are on this page: http://www.carrona.org/drvrdown.html

Here's the older drivers (You can look them up here: Driver Reference ).
Please pay particular attention to any dated 2008 or earlier:

My Computer

Hi, and thanks for the quick reply!

The problem persists. Here's what I've done.

1. Uninstalled Acronis True Image. After restarting the computer I plugged the dongle in, and after a few seconds the computer restarted as in the original post.

2. I thought perhaps my other Acronis program (Disk Director) could be contributing, so I uninstalled that. Same problem still there.

3. Next I uninstalled Internet Everywhere, the program that's supposed to run automatically when the dongle is inserted, thinking that allowing for a fresh install would help. After restarting the computer I plugged the dongle in, and after a few seconds the computer restarted as in the original post.

So I've attached a new BSOD zip with the latest dump information in it (sorry for all the dumps in the original post). I've also attached the two unknown drivers as a separate zip file.

Thanks again for the help.

Also, please go to C:\Windows\System32\drivers and rename "snapman.sys" to "snapman.BAK"
Reboot and see if that stops the BSODs from the dongle.
FWIW - if the dongle is broken, then all of this is for naught. Do you have any way of trying another dongle in it's place?

Nokia and HTC phone software can cause issues, please uninstall them until we're finished troubleshooting.

You've also gotta get a start on updating those older drivers - particularly the one from 1999. There's no telling what incompatibilities are involved.

My Computer

I renamed snapman, updated all the drivers in the list from earlier in the thread, and then I followed the instructions in the Acronis removal link and ran the cleanup utility. After restarting, I got the BSOD followed by the Windows Repair Tool, which prompted me to system restore to an earlier time. I'm back up and running, but I don't know how to tell what my current status is, and there are no new dump reports in the Minidumps folder. What should I do to give you a picture of how the system looks currently?

In the meantime I've uninstalled the Nokia and HTC items.

Using an older broadband dongle works fine, and the one that causes trouble for my machine works fine for my wife's computer (an HP netbook running Windows 7 Starter).

It's getting a little late in the evening here, and I'll probably be going to bed soon. I'll check back in the morning for what to do next. I appreciate your help.

Reboot and see if you can get another BSOD.
Check the screen to see if a driver is named (in case you have to restore the system again).

Upload another copy of the MSINFO32 report to see if it may have caught the errors from the latest BSOD.

Since we've eliminated snapman.sys (by renaming it) it can no longer cause BSOD's. So, it'd presumably have to have another cause.

FWIW - as the dongle causes the BSOD, so I'd presume it has something to do with it. Have you tried to remove the software for the dongle and then reinstall a fresh copy? I'm thinking that it may have acted poorly with the Acronis stuff - so removing Acronis may make it feasible to restore the dongle software and not have it corrupted by the Acronis stuff.

My Computer

I spoke too soon about the removal of Acronis and the renaming of snapman. Whenever I do either one of those actions, restarting results in a quick flash of the BSOD followed by a restart to system repair mode and then a restore to the previous configuration.

I tried each separately, but got the same result both times. Just renaming snapman.sys to snapman.BAK causes BSOD > repair > restore on restart, and using the Acronis cleanup utility causes BSOD > repair > restore on restart. In both cases the BSOD is only up for a second before the screen goes black followed by the launch repair prompt.

I've attached another PERFMON report. I tried a MSINFO32 but got an access is denied error.

I'm working this weekend, so I won't be able to troubleshoot. I will be able to check back in Monday night or Tuesday. I'm sure you're not interested in my schedule, but I didn't want you to think I've abandoned this if I don't reply immediately. I appreciate your help. :)

The system emails me when you respond - so I don't worry about it until you respond. :)

Acronis is still trying to load. You'll really have to scrub the system to remove all traces of Acronis. I'd suggest renaming any Acronis stuff in Program Files or Program Files (x86). I'd also suggest a long, slow, boring and frustrating manual scan of all entries in Autoruns to disable the Acronis one's.

I'm thinking that you may want to consider formatting your hard drive and starting over fresh. If not, we'll continue to work on this until we either fix it or you give up.

My Computer

Just to close this out, we've moved into a new house and are getting broadband with a wireless router, so I won't need to use the mobile dongle. So while the initial issue will remain unsolved, I've worked around it.

I appreciate all your help, John (usasma). Thank you very much.

Carl
