I just replaced my laptop hard drive ...copied files from old drive to new drive.. but laptop not booting... does not seem to find boot files. Tried vista recovery disk..that also does not seem to see Vista.

What do I need to do to configure or set up for new drive?

Thanks

Did you copy any Hidden Files and Did you Recover the Master Boot Record?? If not then this is Most Likely your Problem

Please may I advise that you do a Clean Install Rather than Copying all the Files this can Cause a number of Issues Some cannot be repaired

Please see http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/68767-clean-install.html If you have an Upgrade Version of Vista

And http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/117366-clean-install-full-version-vista.html If you have a Full Retail Version of Vista

Also using a seperate HDD Backup all your Data and Format the HDD When you install Vista

You may be able to boot by Repairing the Master Boot Record to do this please Boot into a Recovery Disk and Open a Command Prompt Window after that Enter this:

Code:
bootrec.exe /fixmbr

And Press Enter

Hope This Helps,
Josh

Unfortunatley no disks were supplied by Toshiba with the laptop..not even the vista recovery cd..I tried the bootrec.exe /fixmbr but no change.although response was successful. How do I recover the mast boot record and/or hidden files? when I boot without recovery disk I get "No bootable device"

thanks

Hi,

Do you have the facility to put in the old disk & run windows? If so you could us a cloning software to generate a working version of your disk on the new drive & resize the partition.

I will look for the software (free hopefully) just incase you can & will post back soon. OK?

No I cant run windows from the old disk..thats the reason I replaced it... it was faulty and also would not boot Vista anymore. I put the old disk in a hard drive dock and could access all the files from my desktop pc ..and that's how I did the backup/copy to the new drive. I was hoping the Vista recovery disk I downloaded would fix things up once I rebooted with the new drive but nothing is ever that simple I guess.

I have a Toshiba Satellite L300 Model PSLB8C-03C01X.
I just did a backup of the old drive and restored the contents to my new drive..all folders etc.
Not sure if the old one can be salvaged..I tried a few things but as I am certainly no expert.(readily apparent) One test I did said it was a "dirty" drive and to contact the manufactrurer.

Thanks

OK,

What software did you use to create the back up set?

If you only backed up the data folders then you have no system files to recover.

If you created recovery disks then you have a system but no data folders. You could have both, if you did both?

Therefore I need you to tell me, what you have!

Did you ever get the option to create recovery disks & did you & have you still got them?

All of these will lead us in a direction & assist in the conclusion of what options there are & whether you need to spend money on recovery disks to rebuild your system etc.

Please explain "what a dirty disk" means & what software came to that conclusion & what tests you carried out.

I did a backup wth Roxio "Back on Track". Not sure if that backed up the system folders? I assumed it would.. The Windows folder is there along with the Program Files folder, Toshiba folder etc. I did not ever create recovery disks..

Thanks

OK,

Unless you have an operating system disk to recover the Windows system there is no windows system to install!

What options do you have to obtain a working system (legally)?

You could purchase Vista recovery disks from a internet site, "PC manufacturer" (preferrred option), upgrade to Windows 7.

Obviously a manufacturers installation system disk would allow you to re-instate the system & from your recovery disk, your files & data, as they would match.

Therefore from the information you have provided, I would recommend that you contact the manufacturer of your system & purchase recovery disk for your system & recover your system & files from the disks you have already created.

Is this OK?

Ok thanks for your help..Windows Vista is in there .. but not in a form I can use I guess.. it just sucks to have to buy anything else. I spent $100 on this thing today for a new drive and hard drive dock and its only just over a year old! If Toshiba wants money for a recovery disk I might as well just go buy Windows 7. They should have to provide install disks for free. Oh well..thanks again for your help.
