BOOTMGR is compressed - only an HP Mini though, no CD drive, what to do?

Doesnt Compute

Hi guys,

I have seen other posts on here with the 'BOOTMGR is compressed. Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart.' error message but the fixes all include restarting from the Vista DVD and getting to the command prompt. My little travelling-sized HP Mini has no DVD/CD drive and just came pre-loaded with Vista.

Can anyone help me fix this without using the DVD?

Sequence of events before the problem was that the automatic updates installed and then next time I fired it up it took around 15 mins to make it to the desktop screen. Roxio Restore is installed and I used that to pick a previous restore point but I must have gone wrong somewhere because hey presto, BOOTMGR compressed.

Any help much appreciated,
Renata :)

Welcome
If you cannot boot, without the DVD, you may have to restore to factory specs. It seems that everything that I have found regarding an HP restore, requires use of the DVD. Since your computer does not have a DVD drive, there must be another method. Usually it is F11. I looked on line and could not find the method. You may want to call the Company or look in your computer manual.
Here is the HP support page. If you put in the required information, you may be able to find out how to restore to factory specs.
I am assuming that you cannot boot.

Even our tutorial on the subject indicates that the DVD should be used.

Bootable CDs and DVDs work in a similar way to bootable Memory Sticks. Open your Vista DVD, and copy every file to an empty memory stick. Insert memory stick, and use the one time boot options to boot from memory stick. There is also a Neosmart Vista CD which is smaller. Really busy. Will explain properly soon. Thanks!
