Windows Vista Freezes in Sleep Mode

I have Vista Home Premium on an HP desktop that recently started freezing during sleep mode ~1/3 of the times I would awaken the screen comes on with the cursor and keyboard frozen. A self diagnostic check advised three drivers may be the culprit so I uninstalled the drivers to no avail. Several system restores to no avail. Finally swallowed hard and did a system recovery(like new from the box) and the problem got worse, now freezes at every sleep session requiring rebooting. The drivers are no longer mentioned when I open "performance issues." Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

Here are my solutions to freezing, and an excellent article, which I hope is of some help
Start with a clean boot, which may give your answer.

Go to search type device manager and look for any yellow warning markers
Run antivirus scan
If overclocking, restore to original

Take a memory test, too.
Download memtest86 and test RAM
www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/105647-ram-test-memtest86.html
Run for 8 passes
If passes try a good stick in each slot for 3 passes
If fails do the same for 8 passes.

Problems like this are often memory related, do you have enough memory?

Thanks for the reply. Regarding memory, according to my computer there is 2924 MB of Ram, 421 free GB of 456 on the hard disk drive and 973 MB free of 9.58 GB on the FACTORY IMAGE. Since I store very little on the computer and use it mostly for Netflix streaming and Yahoo chess, I never thought memory to be an issue. Is it still advisable to run the memory tests? Regarding virus scans I have Norton installed in which I manually ran a comprehensive scan with nothing found. Should I seek another program to run a virus scan? Your remaining suggestions will take me some time for me to plow through though are much appreciated.

Would you be kind enough to send me a screen shot of task manager
performance?

Apologies for not knowing how to send a screen shot though will convey what I view. CPU usage varies 7-14%. Memory 1.04GB, 2nd bar in blue on the graph. On the bottom line, Processes 56, CPU Usage 4-15%, Physical Memory 35%. Thanks again.

Your total memory is 1.04gb right?
If that is correct that is part of the problem. That is the minimum that is needed to run Vista. YOu may have too much going on. Too many programs installed etc.
Try to send me a shot, I can see so much more
Go to search
Type snipping tool
Then with the tool, outline what you want to send
Then save to the doucments
If you do that I can tell you the rest about how to send

I have attached a file of my performance monitor and will next see if I freeze during a clean boot. Thanks.

During a clean boot the freezing problem did not occur during three sleep modes. Also not sure where the attachment of my performance monitor ended up so I uploaded it to my profile where it is readily available.

Dont need the monitor. If you follow the clean boot procedure we can solve the problem. Do it carefully and slowly and report back.

The clean boot procedure produced no freezes during sleep though afterwards I discovered that in normal boot mode it takes a while (?hour or more) before it freezes during sleep ie. will function normally if awakened soon after sleep. Thus the test was invalid since each time I would awaken from sleep in a matter of minutes. I'll have to repeat the test when I have time on the weekend since it will likely take a long while. I'll report back afterward. Thanks again.

If it works in clean boot. Follow the instructions to see what the cause is. Then we can fix it.

I was again unable to get my system to sleep-crash during a repeat clean boot procedure then took your other suggestion that the problem may be memory induced. I uninstalled several programs that came with the HP and thus far the freezes have ceased. Not sure if due to some extra memory or one of the programs was causing the problem. Regardless the outcome is good. Thanks again for your assistance.

If the problem is indeed caused by memory, the test that I suggested will show the precise cause.
