computer hangs intermittently

I have a HP laptop that has recently been hanging for about 10 seconds repeatedly. the screen becomes white (although I can read through it) and I can move the cursor but cannot do anything. The cursor appears as if it is attempting to load. The address bar at the top of the screen reads the address which is followed by "not responding" until it corrects in 10 seconds or so. This happens on the web but also has happened with other programs and functions (excel, control panels etc...). The audio continues despite this temporary freezing. I have run antivirus and malware programs with no luck.

As is likely obvious from my description of the problem I am certainly not a techie but would appreciate anyone's advice that could help me fix this problem. Thanks,
