Recovered from unexpected shutdown after turning it on

Hi,

My desktop was fine yesterday. Today, I turned it on and went to somewhere to do something, and then saw the statement. It stated what I mentioned on the thread title. It was the first time I have seen. I am not sure it is a blue of death, but it was a bit of gray. It also stated something about installing a new software or device or something. It stated that it will repair to solve the problem, and restarted afterward. It then shut down and loaded up a bit slowly with a black screen. It did not come up start up screen yet, and I then turned it off, but looked it was not turned off completely, and the start up screen came up. It was fine. But, I was concerned about it. What is it? I installed a mod for the game-Sims 3 a few days ago, and played last night. Do you think that was it? I removed it already.

The updates are automatically updated and downloaded afterwards. I think I have all important updates to use, except one optional-Windows Live Essential 2011. I don't want that.

I also played games on Facebook. I don't think I downloaded any softwares yesterday, except downloaded items and videos from Youtube with DownloadHelper.

I am going to run Avasti, Maleware, and SuperAnti-Spyware, CCleaner, and Spybot right away to check to see if there are viruses, etc.

Please help me. I am a novice on computers. Thank you.

I think that you are OK
The only error of concern is the one that you showed me, explorer.exe.
If you ran full antivirus scan and downloaded and ran a full scan with malwarebytes (be sure that you do this, dont think that your scans are sufficient) and they are negative, the problem was probably the updates
Set your windows update to notify and not to install. When there are several updates and the computer has to restart, conflicts often occur. Intall one or two at at time, manually
I think that will resolve your problem, but if it happens again, and you followed instructions, just post back.

Hi,
I am still working on back up all of my files, and it should be finished by one hour or a hour and half. I also am going to check to see if all of the softwares that need to be updated before doing scanning. I want to ask, should I scan Avast first, and then the rest of others lastly or won't it be matter at all? I believe scanning will take at least 2 hours to up, depends on how many files, there are.

Meanwhile, I have SpeedFan, Speccy, Auglosics Registry Cleaner, Auglosics Duplicate File Finder, Auglosics Disk Defrag, CCleaner, Spybot, Malwarebytes, SuperAntiSpyware and Avast. I am going to check all of these for new updates if needed.

Are there that I need to scan anything with from Microsoft?

Much thanks.

As far as Im concerned, and most will agree.
A full updated scan with a good anti virus ( I use security essentials)
A full updated scan with malwarebytes
A s full scan with Spywareblaster is all that is needed for Malware protection.

For maintenance

To maintain your computer

10 Tips on How to Properly Maintain Your Computer

Steps that I did not notice on the guide include:

Running a scan disc before doing a defrag

Using Microsoft Security Essentials and Malwarebytes.

Making System Restore points, at least once a week

Makaing a system Image once a month (varies by user)

Not relying on your A/V common sense, should prevail. You know of many sites can cause a problem.

Do not use any reg cleaning or optimizing software.

Download and use Ccleaner about once every two months. Untick any registry entries.

If you follow these instructions, you will be trouble free for a long time to come.

Be sure to back up your hard drive about once a month (varies by user) and to keeep system restore points up to date.

Thanks,
I need to ask won't it conflict with Avast if using Microsoft Security Essentials? Looks like I need to pick one to use.

Running a scan disc before doing a defrag? How can I do that?

Making System Restore points, at least once a week How can I do that? It is new to me.

Makaing a system Image once a month (varies by user)? It is new to me too.

OK, I will uninstall other softwares.

Ccleaner about once every two months. Untick any registry entries. Do I need to do these before scan Registry Issues? I usually use Cleaner to analyze and Run Cleaner for windows and Applications, and leave Registry, Tools, and Options alone.

Thanks again.

I googled up for Scan Disk before using Defrag from Vista, and System Restore.

But, I need to know about system image, use both Avast and MSE or pick one or can use either of them while one of them is installed, and CCleaner registry. Thanks.

Vista does not have a system image. You need to download this softwae and make a copy of your OS, once a month in case of problems. You will be able to replace the problem OS with the image, if done correctly.
Macrium Reflect FREE Edition - Information and download

On Ccleaner it is good to run once a month or so. I untick all registry errors. Vista does not need reg cleaners etc. It will not help and may hurt.

Hello,

I did back up and finished it at 7:30pm and checked for updates for those softwares. They all need updates and were updated, and I then scanned them all until 11:00pm. There were no viruses, malwares, spywares, etc, which is good.

I restarted the desktop and it came on with no problems. I then checked Event Viewer, and here are what they stated.

What are these?

I am going to do scan disk and defrag tomorrow from Vista and do the other things as well.

Thank you very much for your big help.

Thanks for the link, it is new and helpful to me.

Ok, I scanned and here it stated,

VLC media player, I downloaded it, but did not install it. I then deleted it. I don't know why it was still on my desktop. There is no VLC media player on Add and Remove Programs. The rest of the other, are they necessary to update? I believe OpenOffice, Adobe, and Apple Quicktime are the options, but the two PHP, and Apache. Do I need to update those two?

Thanks again.

HI,

Ok, I am going to update all of these, but the people at Secunia PSI said that PHP should be removed because of End of Life. But, I don't or can't find PHP on Programs and Features or type down Search.

For Apache, I am not sure where to download and which one. It is Download - The Apache HTTP Server Project

If that is one, here is the rest of it when clicking on it,

Apache HTTP Server 2.3.10-alpha 2010-12-21

The Apache HTTP Server Project is pleased to announce the release of Apache HTTP Server, version 2.3.10-alpha. This version of httpd is principally an alpha release to test new technology and features that are incompatible or too large for the stable 2.2.x branch. This alpha release should not be presumed to be compatible with binaries built against any prior or future version.

This release is expected to be the last alpha release; subsequent releases will be beta releases as we move towards 2.4.0-GA.

For details see the Official Announcement and the CHANGES_2.3 lists

* Unix Source: httpd-2.3.10-alpha.tar.bz2 [PGP] [MD5] [SHA1]
* Unix dependencies Source: httpd-2.3.10-deps.tar.bz2 [PGP] [MD5] [SHA1]

* Other files

Bold means the links are not working, but Other files is fine. It is too complicating for me, I am not sure where to download. Please help.

I am going to do scan disk and defrag, should I do it online or offline? Will it be fine if I am exploring Internet while running it or should I let it do its work while I am watching TV or other things?

Thank you.

The normal way to uninstall is using uninstall in programs and features. If it is not there it would require a manual uninstall including registry, which should only be done by a person with registry expertise. Ccleaner may be able to help with registry if you try a manual unistall.

Unfortunately, I am not experienced with the Apache project.

As far as scan and defrag, I like to do it when I am not doing anything else. The defrag process may even take longer if other activites are happening at the same time.
