Esata drive problems

Hi
I am having problems with a 1.5TB drive (2 drives actually as I have tried another with the same results) connected to an ESATA lead.
I can read and write to both perfectly well until 366GB free space remains then they lock up or crash the system.
If I go into Linux I can read and write no problems, so Vista is my problem. I had similar troubles before when they were NTFS and now they are EXT3 I thought I had beaten the Vista bug, but no so.
I think I had Vista installed on them previously (as a boot drive) but have formatted many times since.
Can Vista write to a specific area of the disk when installed and its impossible to remove these files so when I now try to write to this area Vista crashes. If this is the case can I do a low level format to clear these files, the drives are Samsung and the only tool I can find is ES tools (this will only run from A drive!! who has a floppy these days?) and cant run this.
I just tried copying a file, vista crashed, I changed the drive to USB2 copied the file no problem (but slow!!)
Any ideas?
