BSOD, Graphics Driver Looks Suspicious...

BSOD! I suspect it's graphics-related...

I attached the minidump files and also the NT6 BSOD jcgriff2 folder below.

My computer is an HP Pavilion dv9700 Notebook PC...

64 bit Vista with an Intel Core 2 Duo CPU.. T8100 @2.10 GHz and 4GB RAM

It has the original operating system installed and i bought the computer 2.5 years ago.

It has an NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GS graphics card.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The BSOD happened after I launched World of Warcraft to play it, and lines and colors exploded randomly, and the computer crashed. The computer crashed multiple times in succession, and it didn't start again until I tried rebooting later. I started it up normally and it seemed to be working fine. I launched World of Warcraft later and played for a minute, but the same error happened again.
The computer has been in safe mode all day today because it got a BSOD upon just logging into my profile on my computer (from the startup screen).
The computer was also very hot around one of these crashes.
Try updating this driver, that appears to be the problem.
Just go to the company website and update.
Thanks for the reply! I'll do this right away and see if it fixes the problem.
I've considered updating before, but could never find an update feature on the Nvidia website, so I just blew it off. But I looked a little harder this time and found that there isn't an "update" feature; it just says "download."
I'm currently downloading an update from 1-08-2011. My first update in over 2 years here...that could be the problem. =P
I'll tell you how it goes, thanks! =)
You had several BSODs, most point toward that driver. If wrong, just post the next BSOD, we will get this resolved.
Okay, I restarted the computer and got another blue screen.
Associated files:
C:\Windows\Minidump\Mini032111-02.dmp
C:\Users\JR\AppData\Local\Temp\WER-171897-0.sysdata.xml
C:\Users\JR\AppData\Local\Temp\WERA5C0.tmp.version.txt
The driver appears to be updated, but it crashed again.
I reuploaded the minidump and whatnot in case anything changed. The zip file seems to be 25% larger this time though.
I'll be back tomorrow. Thanks a bunch!
The reports are exactly the same, but the driver was updated.
Were you able to play this game in the past, without problem?
Can the game be played on other computer
Did you ever get a BSOD, when not playing the game?
Have you recently changed anything, that could be the cause?
Download the upgrade advisor and maybe it can pick up some sort of problem
Free Download PC Upgrade Advisor Windows 7 Hardware Programs Issues
After, I get your answers, I may analyze the reports again, for any other clues, but the reports so far were quite definitive they point to the driver. Of course it could be the acutal card.
Yes. I don't recall getting a blue screen from the game before.
Can the game be played on other computer
No.
Did you ever get a BSOD, when not playing the game?
Yes. I started my computer and signed into a profile and it crashed while logging in/ loading the desktop.
Have you recently changed anything, that could be the cause?
Not that I'm aware of.
It didn't blue screen at the launcher. And yes, WoW is updated.
Patonb, I downloaded the stress test. Where can I find instructions for it?
Richc, I ran the Windows 7 Update advisor, and it linked me to yet another upgrade for my Nvidia driver. I'll try this out.
Hey guys! Some interesting developments.
1. I ran the FurMark test and it ran for a while on the default test at 2-4 FPS and eventually crashed.
2. I started the computer again to test it. I opened World of Warcraft again. Instead of crashing in-game like this weekend, it crashed before it loaded even the login screen. My computer seems unable to process even that, now. The computer had a color seizure and pink and black jagged waves flashed across the screen, and other random colors.
3. While starting my computer, instead of a black screen, it went green for a minute. Then the Windows logo popped up in the middle, and there was some black tearing around the logo. The black blended into the green and the screen faded to the default blue shiny background that normally is displayed before you log in.
I think Patonb could be right. My computer has never failed to render graphics like this before.
Also, i forget when, but one of these times I got the message "PX Engine has stopped working properly."
Reading the thread kirilix, I personally assume from its contents that JRGBlizzard is more than happy to take the guidance & suggestions from Richc & Patonb.
I see no reason for it to be delegated outside this forum at this stage ,or any other.
The most likely answer has emerged from this, as Richard point out, is one of the best for BSOD's.
As you may have witnessed yourself if you have been following threads through this section.
I think that Richc & Patonb have given a nice answer.
Does anyone know what my PX Engine error could mean?
Also Patonb, it appears that my computer is getting worse and worse at graphics, so you're probably right.
Is there anything I could learn from the FurMark test to be absolutely sure? Because it's possible my computer never had much potential for that test, but it's also possible that it does poorly on the test because of the errors it's having.
Would you guys recommend I take it to some computer geek store for them to check out the video card?
Hi,
You PX engine, is software used by cd/dvd burning programs by Roxio.
I simply wanted to explain what it was to you as I'm sure either Richc or Patonb, will respond soon and continue their excellent work.
Please try & be patient. Thank you.
The reports are exactly the same, but the driver was updated.
Were you able to play this game in the past, without problem?
Can the game be played on other computer
Did you ever get a BSOD, when not playing the game?
Have you recently changed anything, that could be the cause?
Download the upgrade advisor and maybe it can pick up some sort of problem
Free Download PC Upgrade Advisor Windows 7 Hardware Programs Issues
After, I get your answers, I may analyze the reports again, for any other clues, but the reports so far were quite definitive they point to the driver. Of course it could be the acutal card.
As suggested by myself and Patonb, the actual card may be the issue. The stress test seems to indicate that is the case. If you want an ironclad guarantee from me, I cannot do that. Bring it to Geeks, I dont think they will give you any guarantees either. I think it is the card. The action to be taken is up to you.
Alright, I'll try that.
I also asked HP Support about the problem, but they didn't seem to fully understand my problem. He thought my applications were incompatible, but I doubt this is the case, because the error occurred while I was in-game, and then made Windows graphics do abnormal things while restarting the computer.
Yes richc46, I think I'll get someone to take a look at it.
Saddly if it iss the card youre done. The cards are on the mobo.
If you're adventerous, theres ways to try and fix it with an oven.....
Usually the issue is heat and cooling cycle breaks the circuitry. You can sometimes gedt the circuits back with a bake.
HOWEVER it could further bugger it up.
The test will just stress it, showing its just not WoW.
