Fn Dropdown

Hello,

I recently got a virus which put "desktop.ini" files in folders all over my C:\ drive, so I follwed the instructions on google and did a search for "desktop.ini" and deleted all the files.

However since I did this, the little dropdown menu at the top of the screen which is usually opened by:
1) holding down the "Fn" key
2) Hovering the pointer near the top of the screen

always seems to be open when I log on, or come out of sleep mode unless I press "Fn" multiple times and make it go away.

Here's a screenshot of what it looks like. As you can see, it's partially transparent, and not really fullly "selected".

How can I fix this problem? Thanks!!!

Hi welcome to the forum.
As stated you recently got a virus. May I ask what happened to it?
Did you delete it, did you use AV or other software to scan your computer? Is it still there?
If so:-

First, to assist in the elimination of possible virus and/or malware.
I would ask you to please use your Anti-virus full scan program facilities, making sure, you have updated the software first. Please advise us of the results.

If you do not have any anti-virus loaded please go to this link and download Microsoft Security Essentials :- Microsoft Security Essentials | Protect against viruses, spyware, and other malware

Secondly, please download:- malwarebytes Malwarebytes a Malware searching program, again, an updated full scan. Notify results please. Both these programs are Freeware

Hello,

I do not have any antivirus program, but I already tried a full scan with Malwarebytes, A Mcafee Stinger, as well as MSE.

But unfortunately none of them worked.

Hi,
You ran malwarebytes &MSE & they did not clear the problem? Is that what you're saying?
If that is the case please would you click on the link below.
Post results please.
How to troubleshoot a problem by performing a clean boot in Windows Vista or in Windows 7
If it is not the case please post back with current state of your computer.

Okay, so I restarted again, and it was still there, then i went into the selective startup and selecting
just microsoft services: problem gone
top half of other services: problem gone
bottom half of other services: problem gone

so I then restarted again in normal mode, and it's still gone which is good. However, now the menu no longer appears when i hold the Fn button or hover at the top of the screen.

This is fine with me, as the fn+F1-11 keys still do all the functions.

Thank you for the help!

You're very welcome.
However, did you manage to locate the offending program from those you were subtracting/adding?
Performing a clean boot helps eliminate software conflicts, occasionally some functionality is lost.
I wouldn't go heavy on the computer instantly, slowly check through.
When all is settled it would be advantageous to do a full AV scan, you have MSE, and followed by the same with malwarebytes. Not forgetting to update them beforehand. OK?
Thank you for updating us. Happy Computing.
