Various new programs won't initialise

Recently I have been unable to run most programs that I've downloaded. I have tried several second life viewers, adobe premire variants, and a few versions of Sony Vegas, none of which have initialised without crashing.

Basically I click and it starts up but never gets past the loder - it freezes and some programs crash, others continue doing nothing.

Help and or sugestions?

I do have an antivirus which I have installed after the first time this error ocurred.

The erro ID is 1000. I'm also getting thousands of events per day - could this be part of the same problem?

I've now tried this, no viruses or malware. That software downloaded and isntalled fine. Is there something about my program choice or is it some common component they use that us buggy that my system can't detect?

I downloaded the software onto my very low spec windows 7 netbook and they worked fine (slow but fine) so I'm thinking one solution, although not highly desireable is buy Windows 7

Test in safe mode. See if the computer works. That will tell us a lot.
