Windows Installer service cannot find MSI files

Hi. I'm having a problem with the Windows Installer Service on my pc which has Vista x64 installed. Some updates that are downloaded successfully via window update like the GFWL 3.5 will not install because it cannot find the relevent .msi file(s) i.e "The feature you are trying to use is on a network/CD-ROM......". I can manually direct the installer to the file(s) but it cannot acess them for some reason. None of the files are on any other computer on my network or on any CDs/DVDs. In Programs and Features there are programs without their corresponding icons down the lefthand side, just an icon of a blank page and when I click to remove them (no change or repair option) I get the same error message as when Windows Update tries to install updates after they have successfully downloaded.

Thanks for any help

Most commonly this is due to malware. In case your current protection is compromised, please try a couple of the free scans listed here: Free Online AntiMalware Scanners (read the details at the link)

I've done a malware check and I don't think it's that. I think I may have deleted a reg entry and/or file when I removed ATI drivers to upgrade them. Something strange happened when I first installed the lastest ATI drivers that prevented a package from installing and the install sumary report that it had failed, the second time seemed to do the same thing but upon restart, the new AMD vision engine loaded as normal and runs every game fine except GTA4 because GTA4 requires the lastest Games for windows of which will not install :/
