Vista home security virus

ok..not new to programming but new to debugging. I have a toshiba satellite (P)OS. I took a Microsquish WINDOWS 7 EXAM. Aced it but got a Vista home security virus in exchange.....OUCH! Took a while but now I cant even get the virus out! Dont want to pay money if I can fix this myself, unfortunately, the hard drive is intermittent. WAS going to squash the whole hard drive for sofware from Windows 7 from my NEW Computer. But the bugger, like I said, runs intermittently. I get to internet SOMETIMES than crashes....now hard drive needs CPR....CLEAR!! LOL! Dont want to pay someone else to do what I can at "least" learn to do myself. Like I said, i can program and do java etc...but not good with hardware. Can You Help a Diva out?
