My list of problems, please help!

I have an HP Pavilion DV6000, and recently I have been experiencing a whole lot of issues. I will list them off, and give a brief description on each.

-CPU Spikes to 100%, and then drops back down to lower numbers in the 1-30% range
-No desktop background: I have a solid black screen as a background, with my task bar and icons only. What's wrong with that?
-It constantly freezes up on me
-Runs slow, I don't know what that is all about
-My Recovery Drive (D) has 2GB free of 11GB, and I have no clue if that is normal or not
-I have no vista recovery disks, and I would like to have my hard drive re formatted so that I have a fresh computer to start over with
-Pretty sure there are more problems, but these are some of my major problems.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

    Thanks,

    Tanner B.

    Welcome Tanner
    What do you want:
Try to fix what you have or just install fresh?
You will lose your stuff with a new install, but we may be able to back it up first.
If you want just to start over, please, give me the make and model of your computer.
If you want to back up, let me know.

Thanks for responding to me Rich!

I would just like to get my computer working right again. So I just want to fix what I have.

It is an HP Pavilion dv6000, about 3 years old. Yeah, it's old, but I still need it so that I can hand it off to my mom when I get my custom gaming pc in a couple of months.

OK, I will give you one step at a time.
When done post back with the results.
Make a full anti virus scan, up date firs
Download and make a full updated scan with malwarebyte
Make a scan with Eset online scanner. There is no need to download this one.
    Post back with results.

Before I do anything, my computer keeps shutting down randomly, no warning, nothing. I can't be on it for longer than 15-30 minutes, and it shuts down, no questions asked. So before I were to do any of that, I need to know what's causing that. Also, one of my quick-touch buttons at the top won't turn on/work. It's the volume control. The volume doesn't light up, and the others don't work at all. They just light up.

When the laptop is off, the quick touch lights, the wifi indicator light, and the SD card slot light stay on. The power is off, but nothing shuts off.

There is no way that I can give a diagnosis with that limited information.
There are many causes of such action, one may be overheating, virus or many other causes.
The first thing to try is to go to event viewer and see if there are any errors that may explain the problem.
You may also want to try a clean boot and a boot into safe mode and see if the problem continues. This will help us diagnose.
How to troubleshoot a problem by performing a clean boot in Windows Vista or in Windows 7

What else do you need to know so that you can help me diagnose what the problem is?

Question: what would it cost to have my computer sent in to HP, be looked at thoroughly, and have the hard drive reformatted? I'm just curious to know what the problem could be.

    Thanks!

What did you find with the clean boot?
