I am experiencing a sound loop and then the monitor goes black, but the PC is still on. After I reboot I check the event log and see an Event ID 7026 that says:

Description:
The following boot-start or system-start driver(s) failed to load:
HdAudint
i8042prt

Actually no I don't. When I built this computer my old roommate, who's an IT, hooked me up with one of his copies, since we had a network setup. I've since moved on and don't have any communication with him.

Okay, no worries, let's see what we can do for you then.

SFC Scan

1. Open the start menu
2. In the search box, type cmd
3. Right click on cmd and select Run as administrator
4. In command prompt, type:

sfc /scannow

5. Let it run and let me know if it finds any Integrity Violations

I have 2 entries under sound, video, and game controllers. One is "High Definition Audio Device" and the other is "NVIDIA High Definition Audio." I tried to uninstall the high definition audio device, but after reboot it came right back.

Just an FYI there was someone else getting that error with the SFC command a moment ago, and I found a couple of pages with info on how to fix it that you might want to look at. Tom will probably get your sound problem fixed via whatever route he's telling you to take, but it's still probably a good idea to get back your ability to run SFC:

The SFC ran fine :) If it reports back that it didn't find any integrity violations then it means that there aren't any problems with the core Windows files. But thank you for the information, I'm sure I'll need it in the future

So.....should I uninstall the NVIDIA sound driver? I'm assuming the HD Audio driver automatically reinstalls because it's a windows driver

Sorry, I got a little distracted from your problem!

Nope, it's meant to reinstall. When you reboot, Vista will detect that a driver is missing and reinstalls it.

Do you have a friend who has a Vista Ultimate x32 installation DVD? Or do you have a built in recovery partition/recovery discs?

Can you download the attached .reg file to your desktop, right click on it and select Merge.

Then reboot and see if the problem remains

Can you tell us a little more about your problem? What are you doing when your monitor goes black and the sound loops?
